I want to play this game, but I'm going alphabetical - and restricting myself to animals I have seen.

    Antelope - klipspringer
    Ape - bonobo/Sumatran orang/Gorilla graueri (I can't possibly choose between them)
    Bird of prey - hobby

    Pheasant - copper
    Pinniped - grey seal
    Prosimian - Demidoff's galago
    Reptile - Komodo dragon
    Rhino - great Indian
    Rodent - south American porcupine

    Waterfowl - long-tailed duck/Russian brent goose

I also want to add that I love strange unique species: it's silly to say that the kagu is my favourite kagu and so on, but it's true.

Ops, I have been for days thinking about make a thread like this, and now casually, searching for a different thing, I find that is already done!

So I will choose now my favourite of each kind of already mentioned animal groups (there are much more non-mentioned ones... your favourite species of comb jelly anyone?). I hope that after rescuing this interesting forgotten thread, other zoochatters that didn't participated here put their lists too!

    Antelope- Saola
    Monkey- Golden snub-nosed
    Rhinoceros- Sumatran
    Small cat- Marbled cat
Big cat- None, but if I'm forced to choose... maybe snow leopard
    Elephant- African Forest elephant
    Parrot- Spix's macaw
    hornbill- Helmeted
    Ape- Hoolock gibbon
    Canine- Tibetan fox
    Pinniped- Ribbon seal
    Crocodilian- Cuban crocodile
    Snake- Mandarin ratsnake
Lizard- Difficult to choose.. I'm between Indian fan-throated lizard and Pinocchio anole
    Marsupial- Numbat
    Bear- Sloth bear
    Rodent- Pacarana
    Tapir- Mountain
    Stork- Black-necked
Lemur- Fork-marked (but any sifaka also could be the most favourite)
    Flamingo- James's
Pheasant- Either Bulwer's or one of the two "non-Himalayan" monals
    Pigeon- Cloven-feathered
    Cracid- Horned guan
    Prosimian (lemurs excluded) - Angwantibo
Reptile (from other categories than already mentioned crocodilian, snake or lizard) - maybe painted terrapin
    Songbird- Difficult to choosemaybe grandala
Bird of prey- Black and white hawk-eagle
Fish (I dislike this category, it would be as saying "Mammal", but....) Slender sunfish
    Waterfowl- Musk duck
    Amphibian- Corroboree frog
    Whale- Pygmy sperm whale
    Dolphin- Southern right whale dolphin
    Deer- Musk deer
Cattle (listed above in a different category than "antelope", so I guess that it refers to any big. robust and relatively short-legged species like bison, Bos, buffalos? Are anoas included? Then, I choose Mountain anoa)
Sheep/Goat (again listed as different category than other two bovids...) Nubian ibex
