I'll definitely agree tanagers are often heard more than seen. I usually am alerted to the local Western Tanagers by hearing them. And more to the point of the thread, I do mimic their calls but not particularly well.
If zoochat only had a "record", button. . . . . No seriously that would not be a good idea but my hopes are set, In a rack of cheese danishes at a local CheeseChameleon. inc. industries warehouse.
Summer Tanagers are considered a rarity in most of Minnesota, they are just on the more common end of a rarity.
Seeing how it has been quite sometime since I have last shown off my list of notable animal impressions. I just thought it would be nice to boost up the thread by listing below, in bold, some new animal calls that I can easily impersonate, (whenever my throat ever feels like doing so): African Lion, (Panthera leo spp.) Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin, (Tursiops truncatus) Common Chimpanzee, (Pan troglodytes) Domestic Cow, (Bos taurus) African/Cape Buffalo, (Syncerus caffer caffer) Domestic Goat, (Capra hircus) Nile Hippopotamus, (Hippopotamus amphibius) Spotted Hyena, (Crocuta crocuta) White-Handed Gibbon, (Hylobates lar) Domestic Cat, (Felis catus) Alpaca, (Lama pacos) (humming) Emu, (Dromaius novaehollandiae) Southern Cassowary, (Casuarius casuarius) Domestic Chicken, (Gallus gallus domesticus) Wild Turkey, (Meleagris gallopavo) Indian Peafowl, (Pavo cristatus) Cockatiel, (Nymphicus hollandicus) Bald Eagle, (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) (signature call, albeit, in a hush-like tone) Northern Cardinal, (Cardinalis cardinalis) (signature call, albeit, in a quieter tone) Nene, (Branta sandvicensis) (soft humming) Barred Owl, (Strix varia) Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, (Crotalus atrox) American Bullfrog, (Lithobates catesbeianus)
I like this thread. I'd love to hear the Emu impression, as it is quite distinctive. The downside of this thread is we can't hear any of these calls...or can we...anyone?? It did make me chuckle a thread about mimicking having full species and Latin names too . Who could say hmm that's defiantly an African Lion not Asian when listening to a human making the sound..? (only joking) I do a mean Lyre bird impression....
I’m still kind of new to it, but the one I can do best is probably the White Cheeked Gibbon’s long distance calls and up-close hoots. Hoping to get better at doing a chimp pant-hoot, but the fast switch from high to low is tricky
I can impersonate humans, Homo sapiens, quite competently. (In all seriousness, I can also impersonate gibbons pretty well. Or at least I used to be able to; I haven't done it in a while.)
