That is amazing!! I always thought Java sparrows were rare in the trade due to their inclusion on the Lacey act. Are they at least not rare in the trade?

They are one of the smartest passerines in my opinion and I hop I can keep one in the future.

They're harder to find than a lot of other finches but they are not unattainable. Mostly they are unpopular in the US which is unfortunate - they are one of the best pet birds and can be very friendly even when you have a group if you socialize them well as chicks. They are one of the most popular and adored pets in Japan where a huge amount of merchandise featuring them is available.

I have a pair, both are tame, and currently they have six fledgelings.

In addition to the Lacey Act they are actually illegal in several states (primarily ones where climate is on the milder side and grain is grown in reasonable quantity). Given they are known to be one of the cold-hardier estrildids, besides already proved itself as invasive, the caution is probably fair. Though as @Sheather has already mentioned they are around in small numbers, and indeed a few AZA actually have them I think. Personally I'm surprised they aren't more popular in spite of the regulations, the wild form in particular is a striking bird and they're pretty straightforward keeping so I've read.

They are a joke to be on the lacey act. Their only naturalized location in the United States is non-continental on the Hawaiian Islands where the climate mirrors Indonesia, despite being imported by the tens of thousands through the 1900's, and they are a tropical bird - even in Hawaii they have an urban distribution and nest in gardens and house eaves. The Java sparrow is a true domesticated species at least in Japan, where it has been selectively bred for color in small cages for centuries. The western population comprises a mix of wild caught stock and domesticated import birds but today in the pet trade mutations are more common than wild-types and the temperaments are usually calm. I don't think these lines of birds have enough instinct to survive out of human care any longer. Some of the states banning the species (Wyoming??) clearly have no idea what the animal even is to think it could survive in these climates let alone threaten agriculture. Florida banned the bird a few years ago, leading to releases of captive birds (which is always the result of these bans). They did not establish free-living populations even there.

With only one partial exception I am aware of, cage bird escapes resulting in naturalized populations involve wild-caught imports rather than captive bred stock, as these birds have to learn how to forage for wild food sources. The exception is Arizona's introduced lovebirds, which show some captive color morphs and have some domestic ancestry as pets may have survived escape after finding the wild flock.

    Current home zoo:

    Burmese Star tortoise (female)

    Argentine Red tegu (7y.o. male)

2 Prehensile-tailed skinks (both female, I'm fairly sure)

Kalatoa Island locale Super Dwarf reticulated python (female)

    Ball pythons:
    Mojave male
    Pastave female
    BEL female

    Clown female
    Pastel Clown female
    Fire Clown female
    Yellowbelly Clown female
Batgirl (Spotnose Leopard Clown) female, of course.

One more clown girl and my project is ready. Sold my ETB to a breeder in October to focus more on the ball pythons. Also gave my savannah monitor to a friend in RI that wanted her for his shop display.

Still have a male border-Aussie, a giant and mean black cat (my wife's), wife also has a tank with turquoise rainbows, black neons, various corydoras, and a pair of black knight Ramirezi. Couple of huge snails in there, too.

I have never heard of this species before. How similar are they to emperor and asian forest scorpions?
