I'm resurrecting this thread to announce I'm now the proud owner of a 48 year old spur-thighed tortoise named Fred. After not really knowing what to do with him (He was my grandparents... :( ) we let him wander round the house for a day. Five days in and he now has his own spot by the fire, bathes in the sun from the window, curls up with the dog and cat, and I take him out for an hours exercise on the communal balcony every afternoon. He could well be the best tortoise in the world, and (as far as I can tell) he might be the most content tortoise as well! :D

Trying to find lettuce for him is currently a bloody nightmare though, the hours I've spent queueing to go into a shop to be confronted with empty vegetable shelves is beyond a joke...

suggest natural nontoxic green vegetation growing outdoors in your area.

Is the tortoise an African Spur-Thighed or a Greek Tortoise (those are also called Spur-Thighed Tortoises)?

I have only a Siberian Husky named Shai but almost since I was born I had Betta fishes. My last Betta fish named Goku died in 2016 and I also have a tortoise named Donatella. PS: I have not seen her in 3 months. I let her out in the backyard and we believe she is underground.

At my grandparents there were usually some dandelion leaves growing in the garden so he could browse at his leisure, unfortunately we're not sure it the ones in parks would be safe. Not sure if the council have sprayed them, and you never know just where a dog will have cocked it's leg... Thanks for the tip though. :)

    Greek/ Mediterranean :)

I have recently started keeping some native invertebrates again. I cleaned out an old plastic dessert pot, lined the base with kitchen roll (to hold water) and part-filled it with leaf litter and am now keeping common shiny woodlice Oniscus asellus, common rough woodlice Porcellio scaber and flat-backed millipedes Polydesmus augustus collected from my back garden.

They are very low-maintenance and are perfectly comfortable eating the leaf litter but last night I put in a substantial piece of mushroom and woke this morning to find it completely gone. The woodlice are certainly doing well - there have been at least two litters born in there over the past couple of weeks; the young are feeding and growing with each passing night.

I can now certainly understand why keeping and breeding exotic woodlice is becoming a more common hobby - it's both really quite simple and very interesting.

@Brum have you let your tortoise out in the recent warm weather? You won’t need to mow the lawn :D

Of course I let him out, unfortunately there's a massive lack of grass on the communal balcony... I live in a flat!:p

My current chicken flock consist of the following:
    • 0.2. Common brown hybrid laying hens
    • 0.2 Araucana, quail color
    • 0.1 Araucana, blue quail color (Living with the other 2 Araucanas)
    • 0.1. Grey meat/egg hybrid laying hen. Big fat chicken, currently housed separately due to health issues and aggressive behavior.
    • 1.1. Wyandotte bantam, buff Columbian
    • 2.3. Brabanter, Black and gold spangled (1.0. living with the Araucanas, 1.3. kept together in an aviary).
I keep these in three 4.5 by 4.5 by 2 meter aviaries, one 9 by 4.5 by 2 meter aviary and one open pen that is about the same size as the large aviary. All chickens have access to a wooden coop on legs and in fact I placed two new coops earlier this year to replace old ones that were in bad shape.

We get quite a lot of eggs, in three colors: brown (big ones from hybrids, small ones from Wyandotte), white (Brabanters) and green (Araucanas).

In my aquarium I keep harlequin rasboras (Trigonostigma heteromorpha), Kuhli loaches (Pangio kuhlii) and Zebra loaches (Botia striata).

I have 12 tortoises, 2 of which are Greek Spur Thighs. They have the run of the garden (which is aound 50ft x 25ft) access to grass, and a heated shed. Foodstuffs I provide, are Common Mallow, Sow Thistle, Buddlei, Hebe, Romaine Lettuce ( not iceberg), Lambs Lettuce, Cucumber (for hydration only) and occasionally carrot. There is a very good website called The Tortoise Table, that tells you exactly what weeds/veggies you can feed your tortoise. The Tortoise Table - Home He will also need UV light/heat to help digest his food and keep his calcium levels healthy.

I should have a purebred Maine Coon by now, but he's in the South Island and he can't be flown north because of the lockdown! He'll hardly be a kitten any more by the time I get him!
The only pet that I actually, currently have is one hen.

I was lucky enough to pick up my working line English springer spaniel puppy, Yahtzee, just before we went into lockdown in Australia.
