Though I call myself a vegetarian, I do rarely eat meat if it comes from a) wild animals that have been shot because of "pest control" (like geese), b) from animals I know which have lived a good life, the chickens from a friend of mine or free-ranging chickens in small eastern European villages for example or 3) some fish if I know it is freshly caught by locals in the sea which I am sitting next to (that does not mean I eat fish caught from mass-cathings). Out of curiosity I have tried things like gemsbok in the past years and I would love to try dog / cat one day, just for the idea, because I really dislike those animals . But all in all that concerns no more than 5 occasions a year (apart from cheese and sometimes gelatin).
A bloke I know lived in Korea for 6 months. He tried to get whale but could not find any. He had to settle for dog which he said tasted ok, but smelt a bit like wet dog.
Yes, I have no doubt that I ate dog in the Caribbean. It's a known 'fact' that the stray dog population in a village decreases dramatically when a new Chinese restaurant opens its doors. Well, so the urban legend does anyway.
I would like to think that this statement is an attempt, sick as it is, to be humorous, unfortunately however I suspect that you are being serious. I find your statement most repulsive and sickening, as I sure most decent, normal people would who live in a civilised society, and delete this in your capacity as "zoo chat moderator", I am sure you will.
Having been a ZC member for a few years, I know that Chlidonias has had several long trips to the countries of Asia, were eating dog is quite a common occurrence. Personally like yourself, I would not choose to indulge in any doggie delicacy dish and I would take a veggie option if no other meat was available that I was comfortable eating. Also a lot of counties in these Asian areas have historically used spices for flavour and preserving of meats, so curried dog is quite possibly something he has experienced in a restaurant as a relatively normal dish. If you are familiar with 'The Hairy Bikers' cooking and food tv programs, they accidentally ate dog whilst in Vietnam, one thought it was duck, they other pig.
I don't find this sickening. Or rather no more sickening than saying beef is good curried or chicken is good curried etc. I think Chlidonias was being serious. I'm kind of confused as to why you think it is sickening though.
no humour was intended, and I certainly shan't be deleting my post. There is a report function if you wish to use it. Out of curiosity, do you consider people in, say, Indonesia, where dog meat is a common dish, to therefore not be "decent, normal, civilised" people? I find that "most repulsive and sickening", personally.
I wouldn't order dog or cat in a restaurant, simply because I don't like what I have heard about how they are raised and killed (sort of like how one might choose not to eat battery-farmed hens or crated pigs). However in villages they are perfectly acceptable because they are "free-range", as it were.
Obviously the words of someone who has never had a pet dog and who has never experienced the pleasure of owning one, that is if you have ever owned any pet animal at all. Also, it was my post which I was referring to regarding it to be deleted not yours, as in the past you have taken pleasure in deleting things which I have posted on here because what I have posted does not agree with you.
Pretty much all animals that are commonly eaten would make great pets. Pigs especially, so eating dog cannot be justified as being any worse than eating pork or chicken or beef or almost anything else so why you see eating dog as being any more sickening than eating any meat is rather strange to me.
