The land is area is actually heavy sand.

 

The underwater viewing is, indeed, very nice. It's a beautiful view, and it is amazing to watch the two behemoths move so gracefully through the water. The overall size of the exhibit is unfortunately and disappointingly small, but the pool is very nice, and the land area is, at least, covered in a deep sand substrate.

In other news, the giraffe calf is a female... I don't know why this hasn't been mentioned anywhere yet because anyone looking at her could tell, but, alas...

Also, the zoo's kea flock will be off exhibit until further notice due to a renovation of their indoor holding and construction of new, off-exhibit outdoor holding for some of the zoo's off-exhibit bird collection.

That's a shame it's small. Seems like Memphis has created the far superior hippo exhibit.

Cincinnati Zoo's website has been taken down by a hacking group in protest of the killing of Harambe.

 

The website is back up now.

 

The pair of scarlet macaws in Jungle Trails has been taken off exhibit because they were chewing on the wire mesh of the aviary. The helmeted curassow is still on exhibit, and a very unique and rarely exhibited species of bird will be going on exhibit with it soon

1.1 capuchinbirds are going on exhibit with the northern helmeted currasow in Jungle Trails on Wednesday.

A screaming hairy armadillo is now on exhibit in the former banded palm civet exhibit in Night Hunters now that the civet has moved into the former bat-eared fox exhibit.

The new female Malayan tiger will be going on exhibit for the first time on Wednesday.

One of the two female Przewalski's horses passed away recently.

A new Brazilian porcupine has arrived for the interpretive department.

Twix the female Linne's two-toed sloth also passed away recently.

Marty, one of the zoo's Grèvy's zebra foals from several years ago, has returned from the zoo's farm to provide company for his father, Shewa.

Male eastern bongo, Sukari, recently left for Sacramento, and female Mazi is soon to leave for Disney. This will leave the zoo with 1.1, Beau and Stevie, respectively.

There are two confirmed high-profile pregnancies within Rhino Reserve and another two that are highly likely within Africa More to come on that later.

 

Im gonna put my money on the rhinos and the okapis for the belt and the hippos and the painted dogs for Africa

 

Guarantee it's black Rhino Seyia, okapi Kuvua (At the zoo still?) since that's the only other high profile species in that area with a male/female pair; obviously the painted dogs, and the zoo has already heavily implied that Bibi is pregnant.

 

You are both absolutely correct! Seyia the eastern black rhinoceros and Kuvua the okapi (Kuvua and Kiloro are still the zoo's okapi pair.. Kilua was shipped out recently) are both officially pregnant, although no due dates have been given as of yet. BiBi the Nile hippopotamus and Imara the painted dog have both been observed breeding multiple times as of late, and it is assumed that they are both pregnant, although it has not been confirmed. They are expecting painted dog puppies in mid-fall and a hippo calf around mid-spring.

Nice to know some high profile African species are actually pregnant, especially the black rhino (not doing too well in US zoos in the last decade) and the okapi calf.
