To start off with news going into the new year: Because Wings of the World is going under renovation until Spring, all Penguin Parades have been cancelled.

    Cincinnati Zoo 2017 Summary

2017 was without a doubt one of the greatest years the zoo has ever had. The Wings of the World renovations are on it's way, the amount of star Zoo Babies was overwhelming, the zoo's fame was strengthened due to the miracle story of a premature hippo, and a brand new gorilla addition opened. Here's every thing that happened at the zoo in 2017 that's worth mentioning. Blue = Birth, Red = Death

January: It's announced that Bibi, a newly arrived hippo, is pregnant - A colobus was born, the first Zoo Baby of 2017 - It was announced that Cinta, a Malayan tiger, was pregnant - Bibi gives birth to a premature 29lbs female, the offspring was in critical condition and would most likely not survive - The calf, later named Fiona, after making progress, ended up becoming an internet star and later the world's most famous instance of a premature animal birth - Blue-faced Honeyeaters hatched

February: Fiona takes her first steps - Cinta gave birth to three cubs but rejected them; they were all raised successfully by handlers - An Okapi calf was born; a male named Moyo - A Southern three-banded armadillo was born

March: A Sichuan takin was born; a female named Meg

April: Imara, the painted dog; mother of many, passed away - A Southern Tamandua was added to the nursery - The tiger cubs were temporarily displayed in Night Hunters - Red-and-yellow barbets hatched

May: Plains Zebras, a new species, was added to Rhino Reserve; replacing the Grevy's zebras - PhotoArk is displayed around the zoo - Jalil, father to the tiger cubs, passed away - A Bearcat from the Brookfield Zoo was transferred to the zoo

June: After months of renovating parts of Gorilla World, the colobus and outdoor yard opened back up - A new Wildebeest, Mike, was placed on exhibit in Africa - The tigers cub are placed outside in Cat Canyon - Fiona and Bibi are put into the same space for the first time - Another three-banded armadillo was born - The zoo received a 34 year-old female Orangutan, named Alex - An African pygmy falcon chick hatched

July: Black howler monkeys, a new species to the zoo, are placed on display in Jungle Trails - Fiona was introduced to Henry, her father - The zoo's lone Capuchinbird passed away - A Black Rhinoceros, a male named Kendi, was born from Seyia and Kendi - Three Ring-tailed lemurs were born in three days

August: It was announced that there was a second Colobus birth - Kendi goes outside for the first time - The zoo's only, and one of the country's few, Banded palm civet passed away

September: Bat-eared foxes were added to the Children's Zoo nursery - The zoo received a silverback, Mshindi, from the Louisville Zoo

October: It was announced that the zoo's two remaining manatees Betsy and BamBam would be released in the wild; they were soon replaced with three younger manatees - A Blue Penguin hatched - Henry, the hippo, passed away

November: Another Blue penguin hatched - A Yellow-backed duiker was born

December: The newly added indoor Gorilla exhibit opens - Cinta, the mother of the three cubs was transferred to the Jacksonville Zoo - Ali the Aardvark gave birth to a boy, after many, many attempts of pregnancy throughout the years - including a false pregnancy

Now upon entry, instead of meeting statues of a Black rhino and offspring, you are now met with the representation of the zoo's two new mascots (presumably), Bibi and Fiona the hippos.

Today was not a good day to visit the zoo. Many paths were closed for repaving, mini projects, and of course, taking down Christmas lights.
For whatever reason, Gorilla World is closed - a few animals were taken off display in the reptile house - the Manatee Springs greenhouse is closed with the replacement of the boardwalk - Also in the Manatee Spring learning area, all 10 or so of the interactive screens were removed - aIn Dragons!, the Blue tree monitor has been finally put back on exhibit - and the biggest news of the year so far: all I can say is Elephant Reserve will NOT be the next big project.

Any ideas what would/should go in the white tiger yard after lone female Popsy passes away?

Turns out Gorilla World is closed due to Anju's death. They are in the works of finding a surrogate for her daughter, Elle, within the troop.

I'm hoping they use the yard for a/the tiger cub(s), and when the time comes, breeding will be involved.

Possibly Wings of the World? If not, the current White Lion area?

From what I spoke of, Wings of the World was not one of the options - the renovations have already begun.

If it's a current exhibit upgrade, I'd like to see something done to the bear line. They re the worst exhibits in the zoo by far. The polar bear exhibit isn't as awful as the other two grottos, but it's not particularly great, either.

I'd also like to see a new Reptile House. The old one should go the way of the Passenger Pigeon Memorial and be preserved for it's historical value. It's too old an too small to be much of an animal building at this point.

If they go big, the obvious target is development of the old Safari Lot. It would be great to see an all new exhibit area back there, but I suspect that it might be a bit ambitious from a cost perspective. Who knows, though. They just re-worked the old front lot for the current African set of exhibits, so I imagine that they've at least considered it. I'm 40 now and still recall talking to Cecil Jackson once when I was about 18 years old. The zoo had just shipped their last hippo to Busch Gardens. I asked if they planned to get another and he said maybe. The old exhibit was being re-appropriated to make it one yard for elephants, so there was nowhere to put a new hippo in the existing elephant building.

When I asked where they're put a new hippo exhibit, he pointed down the hill to the parking lot that is now Africa. Moral of the story being things take time.

The zoo recently accounced that 2 year-old Elle (gorilla) has been living with an anonymous female for the last 3 weeks to act as a mother figure to her. Anju, Elle's mother, passed away unexpectedly in January.

Some odd news the zoo announced today: Monkey Island, standing since 1930, will soon be no longer. The zoo transferred their Japanese macaques to other zoos. So what will take up the space? The island will be modified to house their four growing Galapagos tortoises, and... multiple bald eagles (Could be just for Sam but the statement says "eagles". At the same time, I doubt they'll move him).
