I haven't been to any of them, but there seems be a general consensus that Vienna is one of the best zoos in Europe. I'd hazard a guess that it's way out of the other two's league.

Though collection-wise, Bojnice may have an edge on Vienna in some areas.

Yes, Vienna was a tight second in the Zoochat Cup last year for the whole world, just behind Bronx. I found it a really astonishing collection, with the experience made even better by the excellent food in both the farm and the Pavilion at the centre of the roulette-style area.

The best aspect of Vienna however is the old architecture and how they have incorporated this into modern designs to make the exhibits suitable while still reminding people of just how old the zoo is.

No, sadly. Hard to go there with train from Hungary.

I have been to all 3. Vienna is a wold class zoo. It´s actually not so big, but make sure you spend whole day there and run around several times.

Bojnice is only so-so, but still best zoo in SK. They now build a new elephant house, opening next year.

Bratislava is place that usualy only locals or hard-core zoo fans want to visit. Some animal pens are pretty bad, some parts look unkept. Most are ok, just on the simple or small side.

Košice has also a rural zoo. Can´t compete with previous two.

If you can travel by car, I may suggest Zlín. Not so famous, but within very nice park and with some bird rarities. Hodonín is closer to Hungary, but it´s pretty small (visit for 1 - 1,5 hours).

By train you can try Brno. It´s quality has ups and downs. Bigger than Hodonín.

If you don´t mind to travel by air, look for cheap tickets to Wroclaw, Warszawa or Prague, all have nice zoos.

    Thanks, so Vienna or Zlin.
These are just more distant plans, because I'm a minor. But there is a chance that I will travel to Vienna or Prague with my family within one or two years. Then of course we will also visit the zoo.

Just my two cents but I rate Košice much higher than Bratislava both in terms of collection and exhibitry.

Depending on precisely whereabouts in Hungary you are starting from, Zagreb in Croatia may also be an option, and a highly-regarded one at that.
