Great news! It's been a long time there were tiger cubs at Whipsnade. Was their last breeding the litter from Boris and Wanda?

Yes, that offspring being Mikael and Anastasia. I believe there was a subsequent stillborn litter in the years that followed however.

Thanks for the info :) I remember seeing those cubs (Mikael and Anastasia), they were the first tiger cubs I ever saw.

There’s a sign outside the sealion’s glass viewing area to the inside (you can’t go inside anymore) asking for quiet as there’s new arrivals. As I was reading it the presenter started his speech on the mic and said two pups have arrived to different mums.

This is great news, following on from the tiger cubs last week !

Does anyone know what happened to the previous Sealion born , Oscar? who was born 2 or 3 years ago ? Did he die or was he sent away at a fairly young age? He just seemed to have gone last year without anything announced by ZSL and I don't remember seeing anything on here.

From what I can remember, Oscar was transferred to a zoo in Scotland, Highland Wildlife Park

Highland Wildlife Park don't have Sealions in the collection.

The Boris-Wanda tiger litter was somewhat ill fated. Neither Mikael nor Anna stadia bred. There were two other cubs on the litter both of which died from injuries when young. And just to top it off Mikael killed his father. Not a great bit of management all told.

Visited yesterday and noted two scimitar horned oryx calves. Nilgai have vanished. Solitary roan bull on the nilgai paddock with blackbuck shut in the back half. Only two oryx in the old gaur paddock. Another visitor told me thought a giraffe was missing. Lots of Pere David ,barasingha and fallow fawns. Counted nine hog deer in the paddock near lake

Have the Nilgai perhaps been put back into the Asian Plains area?

Presumably still no male Blackbuck yet- its about three(?) years since the new females came now...

The oldest female Giraffe 'Savanah' died some months ago- maybe that was the Giraffe being referred to?

Apparently the giraffe which was put down was called Willow. Giraffe really are a fairly basic animal to keep. I am not sure why Whipsnade seem to lose so many.

Couldn't see any nilghai in the PTA but thats not to say they are not there.

What a ridiculous statement. Just because an animal has basic requirements, doesn’t mean it can’t be suddenly overcome with illness.

I'm not sure that my statement is the ridiculous one....of course any animal can be overcome with illness, does that even need to be said? If you have a reasonably easy to keep species like giraffe and you lose a number in a short space of time then you are an appalling stockm an if you don't wonder why!! Now that may be your approach with your livestock but anybody with any kind of skill in animal husbandry would question why there are losses.
5 dead in 5 years I think and you wouldn't wonder why?
and none of them particularly old

    No not really.

Saying a giraffe is a fairly basic animal to keep is a ridiculous statement, any mega fauna is not basic to keep.

so really in the great scheme of things are giraffe much different to cattle or goats? Nope. Basic animals. I don't know what you mean by mega fauna. do you just mean big animals? Because it is strange to lump the needs of a killer whale in with those of an ox.

If people want to call a reasonable statement "ridiculous" you really ought to be able to support that.

I wasn't aware of so many losses with the Giraffes. I only knew of the breeding female Savanah, and possibly the very tall female Ina(?) or is she still alive?

    A couple of other questions;

    Was Willow male or female?

How many do they have now? (and sex ratio?)
