Anybody know if the elephants will be getting any further space since they no longer go on walks and keepers are not using as much contact?
As far as I know, was last at whipsnade in April. They are still going for walks just not when zoo is open, as too many people use to chase the elephants and spook them by trying to touch them. So they do the walks first thing in morning or late in the evening,
The nilgai are still at Whipsnade but have been moved to the old gemsbok accommodation next to the gaur. The nilgai are currently confined to the hardstand and have not yet been given access to the paddock. On my visit today, there was also a solitary roan antelope in the former nilgai paddock.
You have been misinformed. the elephants haven't been walked in the grounds since last August. They were walked to some of the empty meadows behind the exhibit for a few weeks longer but even that stopped last autumn. Nothing to do with visitors after all they walked round the zoo for over 20 years without incident
The European bison calf has been sexed as female, and there is a new Gemsbok calf. In relation to earlier statements regarding the giraffe, Willow was regrettably euthanized earlier this month due to ongoing digestive problems that affected her growth and weight gain, and abnormal foot problems
There is a video on facebook suggesting a Scimitar Horned Oryx birth. I noticed a pair between the elephants and tigers today.
I think that ' pair' are both male?! I think there are young Oryx in the main paddock though, at least one, probably more
I saw the third one yesterday, sprinting around the field; a keeper said it's a couple of weeks younger and was hiding away before.
I know it's been mentioned that at least one of them died, but does anyone know what happened to the pair of Asiatic Lions that came from India? Were they in poor condition when they arrived? They must have been valuable genetically, considering reports that the captive Asiatic Lion population is suffering from lack of genetic diversity...
From facebook We are extremely sad to let you know that one of our four tiger cubs was put to sleep this morning, 22 August. Keepers grew increasingly concerned for his wellbeing when he appeared to be finding it difficult to walk and move around the enclosure. Yesterday, our team of vets took the cub to the veterinary hospital on site, to run tests and give him extra care and attention. Sadly, his condition deteriorated rapidly, and he became unable to walk. This morning, the veterinary team, alongside keepers, made the difficult decision to put him to sleep. A post-mortem and further tests will be carried out, which will hopefully give us more information about the underlying cause of the cub’s condition. Our other three cubs are in good health, and remain with mum Naya and dad Botzman in their enclosure. It’s a very sad day for everyone, and we know your thoughts will be with our keepers.
Visited Whipsnade today and saw this sign on crocodile enclosure, Sadly, Amara our West African dwarf crocodile who was 50 years old, was put to sleep this week after health problems. Amara’s two daughters remain at the zoo and we hope to return them to this tank soon. The two daughters were indeed back in the tank today.
4th scimitar horned oryx calf. 3 impala rams in the back half of the roan paddock beside the cheetahs.

The last remaining American bison (a male) will shortly be leaving the collection. This will leave (IMO) an often overlooked but rather special paddock redundant. Also rather galling when you consider that, not far down the road, Woburn has quite a significant herd! Is this the first time Whipsnade will have been without American bison?
No there was an earlier period when Whipsnade had no American bison; it is sad though that, once again, there will be no bison on Bison Hill.
This is very disappointing ! There have been a few species either disappearing or dwindling at Whipsnade recently, I am beginning to fear Whipsnade is heading downwards in the way Marwell has!
