Just who should have the honour of lighting the olympic flame at the opening ceremony of the games on Friday night?

    my pick would either be

Sports star - Sir Steve Redgrave
Non sports star - HM Queen Elizabeth II

Who do you think is worthy for this honour?

    (no zoochat members please;))

Has there ever been an Olympics when a non-athlete has lit the torch?

As a wildlife conservationist I would nominate David Attenborough.

For their contributions to world culture I would have a Beatle do it.

I must admit that I'm not that interested in sport, but I'd go for Bradley Wiggins. It takes a lot of endurance to win the Tour de France.

For me it has to be Sir Steve Redgrave, because nobody else has ever won five Gold medals at five different Olympics.

For a non-famous sports person I would pick James Taylor of Stoke-on-Trent who was told at the last minute that he could not take part in the Olympic torch relay through Stafford because of irregularities with his Home Office checks, despite being passed by the Home Office in March. He was only notified a few days before the event.

He has been given a slot in one of the London relays, but only because his family kicked up a stink.

Oh, and his place in the relay went to a corporate sponsor! Surprise, surprise. Obviously the corporate sponsor had a better athletics record than Mr Taylor who only won a silver medal in the 4x100m Olympic Festival in Turkey last year.

Where you been dude? Was the quality of some of the threads too high for your liking? Or were you designing an 'exhibet'? :D

But yeah, David Attenborough should do it!

I would hope that Sir Steve Redgrave gets the job based on his five gold medals and he seems a genuine nice guy. I am also thinking that Daley Thompson may possibly get it, as the torch is lit in the athletics stadium and it was the athletics stadium where Daley won two gold medals in the Decathlon which is the event for the ultimate all round track and field guy.

Do you have to be British to light the flame? Why not let Beckham do it? I read on the news today that David Cameron was meeting with Beckham to discuss how to "solve world hunger". I think Becks would be more suited to lighting the flame though....

    Hahaha. Hater!

I remember an interview he did with Ali G back in about 2000, and Ali G said in the intro "boys want to be in his boots, and men want to be in his missus". :D

I don't hate him,I think he was a very talented footballer back in his prime about 12 years ago.

It's still not been announced. I suspect it may not be announced in advance at this point.

There's a BBC summary of the favourites here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/18983272

Personally I think Sir Steve Redgrave would be perfect.

So it's 5:30am in Australia and I've just woken up to watch the opening ceremony. I'm such a sucker for international events but the Olympics are my particular favourite. Is anyone else watching?
