Mentions of a Callitrichid island, though no specific species are specified. It's supposed to be a walkthrough island with a children's playground on it that the monkeys can also access. Which is a pretty interesting concept. The island will also have a moat with fish species, which are also not specified (bad quality rendition)
The beavers in Nortica will not go outside yet, as the couple does not seem to like each other. A new individual will arrive, only after this happens will both the beavers be allowed outside (It was not specified as to which of the beavers left). It has also been revealed that the Beavers will be joined by Wild turkeys, animals that were already planned for the scrapped aviary Also: an artist impression of the monkey island has been revealed in the zoo They seem to be keeping the butterfly temple's theming, which I like very much
Wildlands has received two steamer ducks. For now, they are in quarantine, but later they will be housed together with the Humboldt penguins. Source:
Some news from the Dutch zoo magazine "De Harpij": - All rainbow lorikeets have been caught to count them and find out what the genders are. There turned out to be 40,40 birds. - The last red-bellied piranha died, so the species is out of the collection. - The 52 village weavers have been moved to another zoo. In their place 20 black-cheeked lovebirds have arrived. - Two striped skunks have moved to Hungary. - Last year there was bad luck with the squirrel monkeys. Four young were born, but only one survived.
Though we still don't know which specific species will be coming here, we do now know that there will be multiple species held on the island

New species for Wildlands: Palawan peacock-pheasant (Polyplectron napoleonis). A young pair arrived last Monday, today they were released in the butterfly temple. The birds come from Zoo Antwerp and Diergaarde Blijdorp. The recently arrived black-cheeked lovebirds (Agapornis nigrigenis) have laid eggs and the first young have hatched. Source:
This morning lion-male Dudley passed away. He has become almost 16 years old, a high age for lions. Dudley was eating badly, breathing heavily and losing weight. This led to him being kept inside for further observation, diagnosis and treatment. Unfortunately, medication did not work and the prognosis was so poor, that it was decided to put him to sleep. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death. Source: Leeuwenman Dudley overleden
Hi everyone, not sure if this is the right place, but can you guys maybe explain to me why so many people don't like Wildlands? It has to be in my top three zoos in The Netherlands, and also seeing a lot of other zoo in the world, I really don't get the hate... great enclosures, every enclosure is made to fit the theme and habitat of the animal, they try to do something extra, want to give people different experiences, attractions (themed). They just started so I know there are still some things they have to fine tune, but most of it is good, beautiful and well constructed. large habitats for animals. Can you guys explain it to me? is there something im missing?
The old Dierenpark Emmen had a much more serious and focused setting, with innovative exhibitry (the underground elephant house, rat sewer, Biochron) and an overall focus on biodiversity and showcasing as much of the animal kingdom as possible. Wildlands does indeed have innovative exhibitry as well (the ENTIRETY of the elephant complex/pretty much all of Jungola), but the theming in many areas comes across as cheesy and tasteless. That said, the zoo is slowly but surely shifting in the right direction, introducing more species (they had an aviary planned for Nortica that was unfortunately scrapped, but they still got beavers and mixed them in with wild turkeys), and reintroducing that focus on biodiversity. I said it before, and I'll say it again: they should SERIOUSLY bring back the old Dierenpark Emmen and feature species that aren't able to be represented at Wildlands. Wildlands can be the "big ticket" zoo where you can see elephants, lions, polar bears, hippos, etc., while Dierenpark Emmen could have new species like gorillas, Malayan tapirs, Javan or Persian leopards, and *hella* tropical birds, sharks, fish, reptiles, corals, etc. Basically a London/Whipsnade situation, or a San Diego Zoo/Safari Park situation.
