A male cheetah called Bajrami arrived to join Asha sometime in the last week from the Wildlife Heritage Foundation. The two seem to be getting on very well
Few observations from a visit on Friday (apologies if any already posted): New, large and nice looking, Barbary Macaque enclosure just inside the entrance; The area their old enclosure was in now has, large and well furnished, enclosure for the Mandrills (nice group) leaving their old (inadequate IMO) island enclosure currently unused; Building going on at side of "Reptile House" (extending it) and (possibly) behind Cheetah enclosure; No venomous snakes to been seen in Reptile House anymore; Some interesting inverts. in Reptile House (inc. Atlas Stag Beetle, Coconut Crab); Robust roof/canopy put over Penguin enclosure (presumably to keep Seagulls away from the fish fed); In my opinion the new Chimp enclosure, whilst unpretty, is very good -spacious, well laid out and offering good views of occupants. Less enamored with most of satellite exhibits inside enclosure which, although looking nice, seem just too small; Tangential news, old RSCC now has signs outside (with Ring-tailed Lemurs & Tigers on) naming the place as "SWP Sandwich Wildlife Park"; Tangential and juvenile news, the Dog Inn in Wingham has sadly changed it's name to "The Dog at Wingham".
Bird Flu update: Great news for all you bird enthusiasts! The restrictions caused by last year's cases of bird flu are being relaxed which means that whilst we are still taking various precautions we are able to make the birds a little more accessible again from today! You can now see all the birds except for the macaws. This means the flamingos and tropical house are back open and whilst we still have a full roof over all our aviaries the green mesh is now off. It's great to be able to show off this beautiful, amazing and varied class of animals! Lets celebrate by sharing some photos from your past trips of the bird collection. #birdsareawesome - we had such a great response to the otter photo a few days ago that I look forward to seeing what you can come up with for the birds!
A nine-month old Indochinese clouded leopard named China is now on-show in the enclosure next to the caracals. Announcement made on the park's Facebook page.
Probably should mention but upon my last visit the plantain squirrels that were kept near the gibbons are no longer in the zoo, having been replaced with black-tailed marmosets and the Goeldi's monkeys who were formerly living in the chimpanzee house (each species in a separate enclosure). Senegal bushbabies now occupy the old Goeldi's monkey enclosure in the chimp house.
Plantain Squirrel is still in the zoo. It has been moved upstairs into the Chimp house and currently shares the enclosure with the Sloths, Tamandua and the Cotton Top Tamarins
Are you sure? I'm sure it was tree shrews sharing that enclosure (at the end of the corridor) with those animals when I visited at the end of March.
Visited today for the first time in two years and had a nice time. The Senegal bushbabies are in with the sloths, tamandua, (plantain?) squirrel and possibly 3 banded armadillo.
