The Visayan warty pigs will be located in what was formerly the Asian Marsh area next to Elephant Forest. I can remember visiting the zoo many years ago and seeing some type of waterfowl, and possibly muntjacs, in the exhibit but it has been left overgrown and empty for a long time now. By the summer it will have warty pigs!

As long as funding is complete the plan is for the new Asian entryway and small-clawed otters to open in 2013 before the rest of the $21 million Asian Tropical Forest (aviary, Cultural Play Area, Sumatran tigers, sloth bears, sun bears, etc) is completed in 2014.

Very interesting. Seems a good use of the space. This area was earmarked in the long range plan to become an exhibit for anoas and hornbills.

Is there a picture of this area in the gallery? Is it next to the village area?

Another question I have is I recall there being tufted deer either mixed with or next to the Malayan tapirs. Those are gone right? Was it a seperate exhibit? Does anyone know?

@Shirokuma: there is not a photo in the gallery, but when you walk into Elephant Forest as long as you stay straight and then veer to the left you will pass (on your left-hand side) the old Asian Marsh exhibit. The warty pigs will be placed there in about 6 months time.

@Ituri: there was definitely a small hoofstock species (tufted deer, muntjac, Chinese water deer, etc) of some variety along with waterfowl in the Asian Marsh exhibit, which is separate from the Malayan tapir enclosures. That exhibit is where the warty pigs will be, and it is not very far from the tapirs.

In 98 when I last visited, there were definitely Reeve's Muntjacs in the Asian Marsh and Western Tufted Deer either adjacent to or in the Malayan Tapir exhibit, I'm just not sure if they were in their own exhibit or mixed with the tapirs.

    EDIT:
In looking at photos in the gallery, I'm starting to think that the tufted deer were in one half of the tapir yard and the tapirs were in the other.

    2012 Annual Plan (5-page document):

Highlights include the addition of both Visayan warty pigs (near the elephants) and warthogs (replacing the African wild dogs).

The Asian Marsh exhibit originally contained 4 species: Reeve's muntjac, demoiselle crane, mandarin duck and bar-headed goose. Western tufted deer shared an enclosure with Malayan tapirs but now there are only tapirs in that area of the zoo.

This weekend marks the debut of two new species (Visayan warty pigs and warthogs) and the animals go on public display May 5th. The warthogs have replaced the African wild dogs in the savanna zone, while the Visayan warty pigs are near the elephants in the Asian zone.

Any news on Chai? I know they said they were going to AI her one more time... Not sure if it has happened yet. But fingers crossed it is/was successful.
If AI doesn't work, Chai IS still a breeding animal, she should (in my opinion) be transferred to LosAngeles to breed with Billy, and remain at that facility.

Snow leopard triplets (1.2) have been born at the zoo (May 2nd) and will go on exhibit in mid-July. There have now been 34 snow leopard cubs born at the zoo since the early 1970's.

Elephants are dying out in America's zoos | Nation & World | The Seattle Times

    Any thoughts on this article?

Although I believe the writer is bias and probably antizoo, I had no idea this elephant was inseminated so much. I almost feel there comes a time where you need to stop trying. What are the success rates of other mammals that have been artificially inseminated? I'm still curious if the polar bear at the Seneca Park Zoo will be a success story or not.
