Maruska, a seven years old female greater one horned rhino born in Plzen, gave birth to a healthy female in Wroclaw the 6th of January :)

Great news. I'm glad that everything went well, Maruska is just a young mother.

Maruška is very good and careful mother. Both, Maruška and father Manas are young and first time parents. Btw it’s first rhino born in Wrocław, 147 years after arrival of first ever rhino in Wrocław/Breslau Zoo history (it also was Indian one).

Did anybody count how many terrariums are in the zoo's huge terrarium building?

From memory 224, excluding the invertebrate ones, but I didn't take any notes, so could be wrong, but more than 200 for sure.

A male Bear cuscus has emerged from it’s mother pouch:

Endangered marsupial born in Wroclaw Zoo in Poland -- again | Science-Environment

A highly endangered marsupial known as a bear cuscus has been born in Wroclaw Zoo in Poland, the fourth since 2016 when the zoo obtained a pair that had been confiscated from smugglers in their native Indonesia.

The zoo says its the only place in the world where the species has been successfully bred in captivity.

Why is this bear cuscus birth so special? Only 4 zoos in the world house this species and only in Wrocław it has been bred successfully.

Here you can read much more about this rare breed:

A bear cuscus has been born at Zoo Wrocław!

The species is also as yet touted as a rare animal in its native Sulawesi and welcomed as one of their "Big Small Five", anoa, babirusa, both hornbill species and the bear cuscus (VU on the IUCN Red List).

QUOTE: "Currently, only 14 bear cuscuses live in 4 zoos in the world: Batu Secret in Java (Indonesia), Pairi Daiza in Belgium, Ústí nad Labem in the Czech Republic, Memphis Zoo & Aquarium in the USA, and Zoo Wrocław."

Now, I would welcome our Indonesian Zoochat forumsters to give us some insight in bear cuscus in Indonesian zoos. I doubt really that the global population is only located at 4 zoo facilities worldwide!!!!!

That only Wrocław has bred them successfully was stated in Wrocław zoo PR, just a week ago. I really doubt that they don't know for success from their neighbours in Usti ...
Do you have some article about that bred in Usti?

Madagascar Flying Fox (Pteropus rufus) was born. Group of these bats (6,7) came to the zoo last March. It is possible that this is the first specimen born in zoo world history.
Also White-tailed antsangy (Brachytarsomys albicauda) was born.

After a long renovation Bird House was opened today. The interior regained its 19th-century charm. The arrangement of aviaries has changed significantly. Some new species, among them pair of Twelve-wired bird-of-paradise.

Recently a (male) European lowland-bison (Bison bonasus bonasus) named Pomponik arrived from zoo Gdansk. Could someone confirm if the newly arrived bison is a male?

Birds-of-paradise seem to randomly pop up at zoos around here. New trend?
