I lifted this article, which includes an item about 2 keepers abusing the tapirs, which i presume would be the Baird's tapirs.

Wuppertal. Two convicted ex-keepers, allegedly tortured tapirs, an anonymous letter and a zoo director under pressure in 2009 was the zoo - the flagship of the city - always fight back with bad news.

A hawk-eye, the public followed the trial of two long-term keepers. In November, the two had 30 - and 37-year old men brought before the district court. According to the indictment, they are turned on verbally rows interns and have physically abused. The two ex-keepers - they have been fired long ago laid - off a record-breaking laconic confession, made the opportunity to apologize publicly to pass, and as expected, came away with suspended sentences.

Calm returned in the zoo still a no. In an anonymous letter tripartite new allegations were raised. Misappropriation of funds has led the zoo management, yes, even looted several donation boxes. Because the zoo no longer seems impossible, and the anonymous writer obviously talking out of school, put the criminal police investigation files to new. Is now clear: Black's funds did not exist at the zoo. The criticism of the boss still does not floor pulls. For the zoo may have led fictitious invoices signed by an employee - perhaps unwittingly. Without all these histories, this case certainly fall under the category of "Peanuts." But those days are over. It is further determined.

And yet known, was followed by a bang: The prosecutor has a longtime zoo employee indicted for alleged animal cruelty in the Tapir House. And, although the city was believed to have the case resolved in favor of the internal keepers. The kicks and blows were supposed to be in order to avoid worse things in the tapir enclosure, it said. The prosecution, however refers to a long list of witnesses, including film material. Whether the accusation is admitted to the trial, is still open. If so, the process will once again be a godsend - especially for the critics of zoo management.

    There are also many successes

The event of the year in March, attracts hordes at the zoo. The penguin new plant comes on line, and suddenly becomes an attraction beyond Wuppertal out. In a 15 meter long and half page of Glass tunnel to the visitors made the king and Eselpinguine watch while swimming. Three million euro, the cost new facility, thanks to the zoo and zoo, they have a club Donation from the house Mittelsten Scheid. The Wuppertal Zoo works in 2009 a total of progressing further in the list of the most attractive Zoos in NRW. In previous years, to have the new Großkatzenanlage and the young elephant care. Talking about elephants: Early December Young elephants Kibo pulls together to Numbi mother of Wuppertal to Vienna. The zoo takes place in the elephant house, because it is already announced new offspring at.

Among the most famous "new citizens", however, is a Frenchman named Vimoto. He is in the gorilla house since early December, the successor of legendary Tam Tam, the 38-year-old gorilla after a man was Dental died. Had to adopt the Wuppertal Sea Lion by Pepe, who succumbed to a long illness. At Senility dies in fall polar bear Boris. He is followed by a star from Berlin. Lars, the father of Germany's most iconic polar bear baby Knut is the proud age of 16 in Wuppertal.

With the new additions to the zoo, of course, also connects the hope to young researchers in the various enclosures. How this is to make the For example, the white Arctic wolves before, in their enclosure in May six wolf pups romp. Nurseries will also set up in Siberia Ibex and reindeer book. The Milus from Northeast China, which Bennett kangaroo from Tasmania and Mishmi Takins from Asia Report 2009 Offspring. The zoo is not coming to rest, which is why two news be used almost only in passing to note. Veterinarian Arne Lawrenz is President of the European Society of Zoo veterinarians, Director Ulrich Schürer receives the EAZA Award 2009. EAZA represents the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Thanks kiang, this looks interesting. Do you have the link to the original article? This translation is almost unreadable.

I seem to remember serious complaints about misdemeanours and harrassment on interns by the - now sacked - keepers, which may/may not have been valid. I do not know what was the outcome on this in the trial.

However, re the tapirs abuse: it is seriously sad that 3-rd rate anonymous sources are deemed more credible in a court of law than 1-st hand zoo animal management reports, independent Zoo Act inspectors or full-time keeping staff with decades of experience.

I am afraid, that it is an indication how low we have digressed in the public debate where animal welfare is concerned and that we allow emotions before scientific fact and data to be the drivers' of our judgement. It is not what judicial review or evaluation is there for.
