Are kept at four Germany Zoo, Wuppertal, Krefeld, Nurnberg and Frankfurt. What are the numbers like and are they breeding? From what I can gather most seem to be males imported in the last year or so...
Last Yellow-backed duiker at Frankfurt died 25 Years ago in 1989-it was until today the last duiker of any species at this zoo. To the numbers: 1.1 at Wuppertal near Elephant house-no breeding. 0.1 Wuppertal Zoo Okapi-Enclosure 1.0 Krefeld .It is the Wuppertal male from the Okapi-Enclosure-it became to aggressive against high pregant okapi female and keepers, so it was send to Krefeld for the growing time of the okapi calf for its safty reasons to Krefeld. 1.0 Nürnberg Zoo-imported from San Francisco, female has died recently. It was born at Wuppertal Zoo and was possible to old to breed. So there is no future for this species in europe.Their import was complete senseless-theyy came just for display reasons.( otherwise, this the main reason why zoos exist)I don't know the plans, if new animals will come from the States to europe, but I hope, this will not happen again-europe should concentarte on blue and red duikers. The same sad and senseless story happend with red flanked duikers, valencia has imported a few years ago-just one animals has left-if it is sill alive...
Afaik there are plans that Beauval in France will get Yellow-backed Duiker soon. No idea from where exactly they will come from.
Plans and really to get them are two diffrent pairs of shoes-but if so, I wish them Good Luck-if they import twenty animals, there will be a chance to build a european population out of them, but if this rumour is true, I bet they only get a pair...my god, if i think about the costs of such imports, money which c(sh)ould be used for in-situ projects for duikers...
If we should believe Zootierliste Zoo Frankfurt does keep the species again. During 2014 a male from Wuppertal was recieved and kept behind the scenes.
