I thought I'd update my list, as I've visited more zoos since posting.

    1. Monarto Zoo
    2. Melbourne Zoo
    3. Bristol Zoo
    4. Werribee Open Range Zoo
    5. London Zoo
    6. Auckland Zoo
    7. Taronga Zoo
    8. Adelaide Zoo
    9. Perth Zoo
    10. Monkey World- hard to put MW in a ranking, as a zoo it's not great, but then it's not what most would define as a legitimate 'sanctuary' either. I do admire their rescue and rehabilitation work though, so I'll stick them on the list at number 10 (MW is actually one of my favourite zoos to visit, being the chimp nut that I am).

    In no particular order:
    San Diego Zoo
    San Diego Sea World
San Diego Wild Animal Park, while they still had the monorail. I don't care for the
renamed SD Safari Park. Now you can't see the majority of the animals. I don't know
if they still have them, or not.
Los Angeles Zoo (prior to 1990)
    Denver Zoo
Fresno Zoo (smaller, so easier on the tootsies)
Santa Barbara Zoo (tiny, but right by the Pacific Ocean, and gorgeous)
California Living Desert Museum (by Palm Springs- the zoo has fascinating
and unique desert species from around the world, including the Mexican wolf
    and the addax antelope)
    Phoenix Zoo
Lima Peru Zoo (their herds of white-lipped peccaries and capybaras were
fascinating, and they had other animals unique to that country)
    Hogle Zoo
Willow Park Zoo- Logan, Utah (the zoo is tiny, but has a very nice
pheasant collection, an albino porcupine, coatimundis, and fallow deer)
I like all zoos, because there are cool animals and usually plants in all of them, no matter how small. Small does not have to mean bad, and big doesn't always mean good. Every zoo is flawed and could improve, and every zoo has good points.

Can I ask you why Dartmoor is in your worst ten? It's not a major UK collection I can grant you that, but in it's current state, on of the ten worst?

Because despite all the publicity and money that has been given the place, since Ben Mee took over it has not realy achieved any of the things that Mr Mee said he wanted to do,on the Tv series about him taking it over.In fact given the choice I would visit the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth as I feel it is better value for my money!

In fact since he took over it has lurched from one finacial crisis to the next, only to be bailed out by either a book or a film, but if what I have heard over the last weekend is correct it could be in trouble again,in which case this time it could be all over this time1

As a place I do like it, but I can't help wondering that the simple approach is what it needed, use everything it has to it's advantages. A multi million pound research centre, doesn't quite seem to fit the Dartmoor bill in my opinion...

You mean there are 9 places worst than no. 10!!!!

One you missed off this list is Bugworld (now closed), that was a pretty poor show I'm sure many will agree. I did visit Anglesey Bird World many years ago and recall it was awful, up until recently it was still signposted in Anglesey.

Well if you look you will see that 4 of the places are now closed, which I think says it all as to how good they were! Also you will note that a very high number of these awful collections are in the Lakes area,I'm not sure what that says but I do find it hard that so many poor collections can be in one area.I never actually visited BugWorld and its a big regret of mine as a result,as I now the person the designed and set the place up,and I have to admit I still feel abit guilty about never going and supporting the place.

Wales and the Lakes seem to make up the majority of the UK contingent of that list ;)

The worst thing about Bugworld was that it was so tiny. It was clean, it was tidy, decent layout (what there was of it). Its primary problem was not enough exhibits as after 20 mins I was done in their! - I felt robbed!
