Are they the last of their species in the United States? I'm glad I was able to see them when I visited Atlanta.

Well, I'm going to Atlanta for the first time next week... I was super hype to see tanuki, they were by far the animal I was most excited for. I'm glad they are, in fact, in another US zoo, but man, I don't think that I'll ever be in Oklahoma...

Does Zoo Atlanta have any invertebrate exhibits or an invertebrate house in addition to their new reptile and amphibian complex?

A female Western lowland gorilla has been transferred from Zoo Knoxville:

Endangered western lowland gorilla Machi returns to Zoo Atlanta

Machi first came to Zoo Atlanta with her mother, Choomba, in 1988 from Emory University’s Yerkes National Primate Research Center. She lived at the Zoo until 2013, when she moved to the Knoxville Zoo.

Zoo Atlanta says Machi will join their geriatric group, where she will be reunited not only with her mother but with her former mate Ozzie and gorilla Kuchi, with whom she has lived with before.

Three Warthog piglets were born April 13:

Zoo Atlanta welcomes three new baby warthog piglets

The three little girls are the first offspring for 7-year-old Eleanor and the father, 2-year-old Hamlet. They're the first warthog piglets born at the Zoo since Eleanor's own litter to the late Shirley and Vern in 2014.

A Hooded vulture has hatched at the Zoo. For the first 4 days the chich has been hand-raised but then it was given back to the parents which are now raising the chick :).

Just read the story and be amazed that the hard work of zoo staff to get the pair bonding, breeding and hatching a chick over the last decade. Actually, the pair has been producing infertile eggs for 8 seasons prior to this one and the first 2 eggs from this year were infertile too. Only their 3rd egg proved fertile and was taken for incubation and the parents given a dummy egg. When the chick hatched it stayed behind for another 10 days in rearing before being reintroduced to its parents. And the pair have done beautifully since ..., kudos to everyone involved!

BTW: Also nice reminding ourselves it is the 2nd important vulture hatching this year as a hooded vulture was also hatched earlier at Atlanta Zoo! To top it off: it is a full F2 generation as both parents are an F1 breeding pair born in captivity in the early 2000's.

According to the zoo's social medias: several bird chicks of various species have been born recently including the zoo's first sucessful hatching of a Bruce's green pigeon, two azure-winged magpie chicks, and five golden-breasted starling chicks! :)
