The last Purple-throated fruitcrow has died last year according to ZIMS, which explains why a few members couldn't see it (nor was it signed) for a few months now.

According to Zootierliste, Zoo Berlin has received 0.2 White-tailed deer from Wildpark Connewitz which means the Zoo has finally got another American cervid (as in geographical American cervid, not Rangiferini which includes reindeer. The zoo does keep reindeers but of the fennicus subspecies) barring pudu (which wasn't the case since they ceased keeping Marsh deer in 2009, as far as I know).

I like what Knieriem has been doing so far...

Just as a note, the White-tailed deer are behind the scenes currently.

But they do have Mesopotamian fallow deer now instead of the European fallow deer...

Appears that the White-tailed deer are already visible. I saw the two ladies in the enclosure that has held Goitered gazelle in the past, opposite the Muntjac.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit today, the Trumpet manucode is still going strong and the Kiwi in the birdhouse were active throughout the day. Building on the carnivore house is well underway, the Lion, Sand cat, Tiger, Rusty-spotted cats and Ring-tailed vontsira are still visble though. The nighthouse is inaccessible though. All species kept before the Renovation will return bar the Fossa, Ocelot, Polar and Corsac fox and the Meerkats. New will be Serval.

Building is almost completed for the Bird of Prey aviaries and bar one all aviaries are inhabited. There will be around 13 specied kept, some in Walkthrough aviaries. The Brahminy kites are now in Cologne and the rare Eagle owl taxa are on show in the Tierpark. The meerkats got a new home in the former Nutria enclosure at the Rodent rock.

I'll be honest, with the exception of the Meerkats I'd take any of those species over the arrival of Serval :p

    Excellent news :D

Last I heard the Bubo sumatranus has not been on-display at Tierpark since last Autumn, so given the extreme age of the bird in question it may not be alive.

You need to know where to find it ;). I saw it yesterday in a hidden away aviary not far from the Gibbons.

Excellent :) got to appreciate it whilst there is still the chance, given it's the last one in Europe.

How many birds of prey were held at the Zoo prior to the renovation?

The following animals are still around:

    White-headed Vulture
    (Trigonoceps occipitalis)
    Northern Caracara (Caracara cheriway)
Western Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus percnopterus)
    Non-subspecific Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus)
    Hooded Vulture (Necrosyrtes monachus)
    White-necked Raven (Corvus albicollis)
    King Vulture (Sarcoramphus papa)
European Great Gray Owl (Strix nebulosa lapponica)
    Spectacled Owl (Pulsatrix perspicillata)
    Palm-nut Vulture (Gypohierax angolensis)
    Snowy Owl (Nyctea scandiaca)
    Southern Ground-Hornbill (Bucorvus abyssinicus)
Pied Crow (Corvus albus) (not completely sure about this one)
    Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)
    Eurasian Griffon (Gyps fulvus)
    Lammergeier (Gypaetus barbatus)
Northern Harris' Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus harrisi)

The Golden eagles from TP Berlin are also in the Zoo now, the Bald eagle are now next to the Pheasantry, but will probably be the ones inhabiting the empty aviary next to the Griffion vultures.

Wait, a raptor walkthrough aviary???? That's a new concept that I never saw in any collection... and it's a bit weird. Having experience with raptor care, I know that most of the birds will either get scared from visitors and damage themselves, chase visitors asking for food, or attack visitors in territorial defence...

I've been in several raptor walkthrough aviaries: the old one of Burgers Zoo (griffon vultures), Rotterdam (several species of vulture, black kites), Amersfoort (griffon vultures), Budapest (vultures, bateleur)...

It's a pity the pygmy owls have gone. They were my favourite species in the section in 2015.

Will there be other enclosures for the birds which aren't there?
