If I remember right there was a plan to move the gorillas and perhaps the orangs to the elephant house once they move to their new and upgraded enclosure. I’m sure at this point it would allow for some up grading and movement within the primate house.

On March 23rd, the zoo released footage of the rhino and tapir house being demolished. I remember a decade ago Zoo Berlin being on my wish list because they had a rhino house where they housed both Black and Indian Rhinos in the same building right next to each other. I wanted to see the enormous Yohda but now I'll never get the chance. He looks like a prehistoric anomaly next to the Black Rhino. I think this is the male black rhino that is next to Yohda in the vid. Yohda passed away in 2017.
From today's perspective, one must say that this house has fortunately now become part of zoo history. From the historical point of view, however, this house was something special - it was the only animal house designed only for rhinos and tapirs in the world, in which at the same time three species of rhinos and two species of tapirs were kept - for some years there lived 1.3 malayan tapirs ! Unfortunately, this group never bred. In total there were three tapir species kept here. From 1964 to 1974 the okapi bull "Patrick", born in 1962 in Paris, lived here, a female could never be acquired for him. Three Indian rhinoceroses were born here, in 1972, 1976 and 1979. Only the last born calf "Heiner" was also conceived in Berlin, the other two were conceived in Basel. From 1981 the black rhinos have bred here with great success. Now it remains to be seen how the new rhinohouse will be. The zoo has still not officially confirmed the presence of Malayan tapirs -as far as I know- but since the lowland tapirs now live in the extension area, and the house is designed to be Asian, it is safe to assume that it will be.
Interesting. I remember going in this house when I visited the Berlin Zoo many years ago now- it is, together with the Ape House, the only part of the zoo I can properly remember from way back then. I agree it is, or rather was, very much a design of the past. Notice how on the video, the bull Indian rhino 'Yodha' is clearly stereotyping- repeatedly butting the door and raising a foreleg. Perhaps the close proximity of the adjacent black rhino was the cause?
