The zoo won two CAZA awards...

First the Thomas R Award for their mixed white rhino, red river hog, waterbuck, and marabou stork exhibit.

The second was the Professional of the Year Award which went to veterinary technician Rock Boily.

Two female Eastern grey kangaroos, Heather and Blue, are due to arrive soon from Fort Wayne to breed with Kenzi. His son Zumba will be leaving for Children's Zoo at Celebration Square in Michigan to join a bachelor mob.

African spotted necked otter, Rufus, was sadly put down last week due to his deteriorating health thanks to old age. He was just over 20. His mate Dafina is adjusting well to his loss.

The zoo has also offered a temporary home to 2 lions and 2 Amur tigers from Cherry Brook as they await paperwork to be moved south. They have arrived and are on rotation with the zoos lions and tigers. They are expecting to transfer them come spring.

Interesting that the two lions from Cherrybrook are actually siblings of one of the Granby Lions. Sounds like they have enough room to have all the tigers on display at a time. Nice to see one zoo helping out another after it closed.

The zoo will apparently be opening a new Animblocks exhibit next year. Basically life sized Lego animals. As a Lego fan from childhood I think its a neat exhibit to add probably just for the year but who knows maybe longer. The example lioness they showed a photo of on Facebook looks incredible! Where can I get a job putting together Lego for a living? That sounds fun!

How many giraffes are currently living at the zoo right now and how old are they?

I know before the pandemic they had two females, Kumi and Ushindi who would be 6 and 5 respectively. At that time they were seeking a male as both girls were super valuable. No clue if they got one.

There is a new kangaroo joey named Holly.

The rainbow lorikeet aviary is open to the public again as Avian flu concerns subside.

The zoo did post about hoping to get dholes in the near future. It was a random Facebook post but I wonder if something is about to happen there. They are the ones who said they hope to have them in the near future but then again its a translation from French and sometimes its not accurate.

*I do not speak French-Canadian and the only thing that mentions the arrival of wildebeest is a 10-minute video in French-Canadian. If anyone can speak that language and could answer these questions that would be much appreciated; How many animals did the zoo acquire, what kind of wildebeest did the zoo acquire, and where did they get the wildebeest from?

According to the video and to an article in french, the zoo acquired two wildebeest, Eugénie (F, 6 years old) and Louis (M, 3 years old) from Parc Safari (Hemmingford, QC). They live with the two rhinos, red river hogs and marabou storks, and they replaced the waterbucks which were only a loan from another zoo.
The article said that the zoo is planning to acquire African cichlids and a type of bird to live with the hippos. There are also plans for the Japanese serows to live with red-crowned cranes in a new exhibit.
The article: La cohabitation en vogue au Zoo de Granby

I was at the zoo last week so if any of you have a question I will be happy to answer!

Interesting move bringing Kamaria to Granby. She cant breed with Congo, he is considered generic and is not allowed to breed. Kamaria is pretty darn valuable. She could have stayed in Seattle and bred with their incoming male like her sister. If they had sent her to Calgary instead she would have had their males who are very valuable and not breeding with their girls who are not valuable at all.
