WHAT is opening at this time? Certainly not the zoo. Did you mean 2014? Seriously, I'm very curious as to what the best guess is on when the new Paris Zoological Park will reopen?

2 weeks ago, Paris has send the female hippo Pelagie to Zoo Hannover.
Is the male hippo Rodolphe still live in Paris? Or has he be moved away or died?

Both animals were supposed to be sent to Alger. But it was not possible because the female hippo was too afraid... Don't know if the male was eventually sent to Alger or not.

I would presume the Zoo d' Alger, Algeria deal fell through. Hence, I do hope they will find a good home for the male hippo within the Hippo ESB.
Incidentally: did they ever consult with the Ostrava Studbook Monitor?

According to some people that were at zoohistorica at Leipzig,no only thing that has happened at the site is that even more of it is falling down!

Ahh, thanks:) I guess it seems that's progress. Tho to me it looks more + more like they are just knocking it down than actually re-developing it:(

Found this site Bernard Tschumi Architects and was wondering if anyone knows if they are the current architects and how the renovations are going?

as I understand construction is on schedule and within budget. They're working on the big greenhouse at the moment. The giraffes should move to their new enclosure this december

Thanks for posting this article forumbully. From what it says it looks like April 2014 is the projected opening date. The Google translate function on the article is somewhat hilariously imperfect, but here is the translation of the article into something resembling English:

"Forgot the rock monkeys and dilapidated concrete blocks from which emerged rusty metal rods. This equipment - symbolic of the state of disrepair of a zoo built in 1934 - was razed. It has been replaced by a gigantic dome of glass and steel that culminates now proudly above the Bois de Vincennes.

Item flagship zoo of the future, this large greenhouse which will run on 4000 m2 in the heart of Guyana, Madagascar biozone will have huge basins (volume total higher than an Olympic swimming pool) to host the aquatic fauna tropics. Opened in April 2014 If the shell of the real "UFO" is now complete, the reconstruction of the zoo they are only halfway. Launched in 2011, the site Pharaohs, whose total cost is estimated at € 167 million, no end in effect until the end of 2013. The park, zoo transformed into the twenty-first century, will reopen its doors to visitors in April 2014 ... almost six years after its closure. "For the moment, we are in time and within budget," says Thomas Grenon, Director General of the National Museum of Natural History, noting that many great events await you park managers by reopening. The first one will take place in December with the delivery of a new enclosure for the giraffes. "They will then have the right to a living space of 10 000 m2, 3000 m2 only against right now," said Thierry Le Bec, zoo director and head of the reconstruction project. "The choice to give them more space led us to modify the plan of zoo collections," says the specialist stressed that the future zoo welcomes more elephants or bears, too greedy space. Eventually, the Vincennes Zoo rehabilitated host 175 species and more than a thousand animals. Managers of the National Museum of Natural History (who will pay rent of around € 14 million for twenty-five years private consortium responsible for rebuilding the zoo) to show resolutely optimistic about the future site visits. "We rely on an annual attendance of 1.8 million visitors," says Thomas Grenon. '"

There is a wrong translation. The article in Le Parisien says "there will be NO MORE elephants or bears" NOT "more elephants or bears". (Sadly, I have to say. Wasn't it possible to get more space for the zoo? Afaik, zoo grounds in Vincennes are within a park area. So they have - at least in theory - the chance to extend.) Also: A capital city without elephants, big bears and tigers? Hmh...

I have searched the web and found a map of what the zoo will look like after the renovation including species but it is in French. Most of the names are similar to English.

It's been a few years since I've visited, but jardin des plantes is in a park area (jardin des plantes meaning garden of plants, as you know) But as far as I remember there isn't much free "green" space around bois de vincennes.

I think it's sad too they don't really have many typical zoo animals, but on the other hand. who knows what the future brings. after all, no zoo is ever done renovating and opening new enclosures, they'd be out of customers soon.

Thanks for uploading the map - very interesting. Given the choice of 'Lynx d'Espagne, ou d'Europe' I definitely know which one I'd prefer to see!
