Since yesterday the Zoo Hoyerswerda has again Brown bears in its collection. 2 brothers - Bjorn and Bengt - were born 2010 at the Nationalpark Bayrischer Wald and now moved to the newly build enclosure at Hoyerswerda.
The Zoo Hoyerswerda had an old pair of Leopards from which the male was born in 1994 and came to Hoyerswerda in 2001. Because of its old age he already had for a longer time problems with it's kidnies. After he started also to refues it's food and madications couldn't given anymore, the zoo dicided at saterday 14 April to put him asleep. The zoo is now left with a 20 years old female.
I just had a look at their website and zoo map. The map has various animals represented by images which are incorrect. For example there is a picture of pronghorn when it should be sable antelope.
Some news from Hoyerswerda : Red-crowed cranes have bred African spurred tortoises have young Southern Pied hornbill female is sealed-in in the nest-box

3 ( 1-2 ) of the 2018 hatched Cuban crocodiles have been send to Serpo Reptilian Zoo - Rijswijk - the Netherlands ( which is by the way still not re-opened ). The other 2 2018-hatched young - both males have been send last week to an UK-collection. Hoyerswerda started keeping this species 1986 and had its first succes 2013 when 6 young were bred - a German first breeding. Umzug: Kubakrokodile aus dem Zoo Hoyerswerda werden Niederländer | MDR.DE
On 4th May a North Chinese leopard was born! Mother is BaoBao and father is San. According to zoo's statement, it's the first surviving cub for the female (and her first with Hoyerswerda's male San). It's worth noting here that zoo opened also new leopard exhibit lately. As far as I know the male is occupying the new part and mother & cub the old one. Source is zoo's facebook page
Cuban crocodiles have laid eggs. The eggs are placed in 2 different incubaters at 2 different temperatures to make sure both males and females will hatch : https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=289728455769974
The Cuban crocs are being rebred as there seems renewed interest in them from other zoos or interests in conservation breeding? Have the crocs now been positively genetically typed for purity?
There seems to be indeed some intrest in the species from other zoos but about the purity I don't have any information.
Yesterday the 2-year old female Bactrian camel Soraya arrived from Dierenrijk (The Netherlands), the zoo now has 3 female Bactrian camels. Source: Instagram of Zoo Hoyerswerda (17/04/2021) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNukwktipCZ/
Last Wednesday a male Southern three-banded armadillo (Tolypeutes matacus) was born, making it the second Southern three-banded armadillo to be born in Zoo Hoyerswerda! Source: Instagram of Zoo Hoyerswerda (16/07/2021) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRWQHUsK7bi/
Sadly the male Southern three-banded armadillo (Tolypeutes matacus) that was born last year passed away in March. A female Indian crested porcupine (Hystrix indica) also passed away in March. In May a North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) was born. The zoo received a female Round-eared elephant shrew (Macroscelides proboscideus) from zoo Zoo Augsburg. In June 4 Little Owls (Athene noctua) hatched, which later will be released in Naturpark Nuthe-Nieplitz. In July 45-year old female Western pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis liberiensis) Paula passed away due to age realted illnesses. She arrived from Burgers Zoo in 2017, currently Zoo Hoyerswerda only has a 36-year old male Western pygmy hippo. On the 23th of July 14-year old Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) Irina was euthanised, she was born in Zoo Hoyerswerda in 2007. She was the last (Siberian) tiger in Hoyerswerda and their former enclosure will house North chinese leopards (Panthera pardus japonensis) in the future. In July 7 Lesser hedgehog tenrecs (Echinops telfairi) were born. Sadly 4 Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) passed away at the beginning of September. One passed away due to a bacterial infection another penguin due to a fungal infection. At the end of September 3 more penguins had passed away, leaving the zoo with only 2 Humboldt penguins. No exact cause of death could be established for the other penguins, therefore the zoo has decided not to send the remaining penguins to a different zoo or to receive new penguins. In October the 2 male European brown bears (Ursus arctos arctos) were send to Zoo Augsburg, because their enclosure is getting renovated. This means that Zoo Hoyerswerda currently has no brown bears. In November the pair of Common ravens (Corvus corax corax) moved into their new aviary. This aviary has a height of up to five meters and a volume of 300 m³. At the end of March a Hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) hatched! In recent years multiple eggs were laid but either never hatched or the young weren't fed by their parents. Luckly this young is gaining weight, so let's keep our fingers crossed! Source: Instagram of Zoo Hoyerswerda (30/04/2022) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc7r3xGKU-5/
