    This would be great.

A while back (I think in June), I asked my local zoo for a species list, and told them I'm working on a zoo animal database), and they gave me a species list.

I think I deleted the document, and I haven't gotten ahold of them in quite a while. So, maybe you could try to email your local zoo about this stuff.

Did you actually read anything prior in the thread? An American version of ZTL is not likely to happen at all.

Did you even read this thread? Most US zoos don’t want this sort of thing to exist so just because your home zoo sends out these lists doesn’t mean others will. ;)

I really need to read further into stuff. I think that's my main problem, I don't always read the whole thing, and I just jump in.

Off the top of my head ZIMS would probably be the closest, but I have next to no knowledge of how it works so I cannot say how different it is.

The answer is no but read this thread for more information.

If you’re interested in knowing what zoos keep “x” species, there are numerous threads like these including one called “Bird of Prey in North America” There are also species lists of numerous zoos on here that list all the species a zoo has. Use the search tool to find all of these. :)

What is ZIMS? Also, zooinstitutes has some of the animals kept in North and South American zoos, though it is not comprehensive.

Zoological Information Management System, the recordkeeping system that many (but by no means all all) zoos use to handle records and inventories.

Unfortunately, if I recall correctly, ZIMS is no longer publicly available due to zoos no longer willing to publicly share their collections. I believe you are still able to purchase a membership to have access to these documents though.

It is sort of happening piecemeal, here: North America - General

For birds of prey specifically, see Birds of Prey in North America and Falcons and Caracaras in North America

You have to be employed by a zoo with a certain position for access, generally. It's also self-reported, so IDs may not be correct (especially when you're looking at roadside places, as you can imagine), and may not be updated.

I do not think there exist a membership category allowing you access to ZIMS data unless you work at a zoo. You may put in a request with ZIMS/Species 360 for data sets I have been told. Not sure though how that works and whom to apply to for data list. This is said to be a restricted service for 2 items each month.

Agreed, in my opinion it was always a sign of transparency as well as indicating what value and how important zoo collections are for ex situ species conservation management and breeding.

If anyone actually wants to try and create one I can provide information on the animals currently on display at the shubenacadie wildlife Park in Canada

Any reason why American zoos don't want to share their number of collections with the public?
