ZOO Jihlava: the first Sun Bear, female Aja, arrived to the new enclosure for bears. Their old home was completely reconstructed and now the facility is modern, providing nice space and interesting exhibit. Aja is from ZOO Hodonin. New male, Adam, will come on Wednesday and he is from Berlin.

News to start off a new thread:

On 29th May, the zoo welcomed a litter of three Snow Leopard cubs. They have now been sexed as two males and a female and will be given names in August. Father was born at Berlin Tierpark in 2004 and the mother was born at Jihlava in 2006

Last weekend, the newly finished australian themed complex "Pollack´s farm" has been unveiled. It consists of a replica of an outback farm, with animal enclosures inside and barns and aviaries outside. Species on exhibit are: budgerigars, cockatiels, eastern rosellas, rainbow lorikeets, alexandrine parrakeets (will be replaced later), a woylie, water rats, ground cuscuses, sugar gliders, woma python, some leaf insects, black swans, domestic sheep, emus, red kangaroos, laughing kookaburras and eastern quolls. Some exhibits are still empty (cassowary, domestic fowl, cockatoo etc.).

The next opening ceremony is planned for 5th of June. The new giraffe house will contain a bachelor herd of giraffes, damara zebras, fenneks, nile lechwes, hyraxes, sand cats, galagos, some rodents, flying foxes etc.

Later this year (end of summer?), the new stripped hyena enclosure, a new african primate house and a house for gibbons and babirusas will be completed.

This small zoo is owned by the town Jihlava (population of 50.000). Their attendance is steady around 250.000 annually, but they hope after completition of this enlargement, they could get ca 30.000 more. The region is rural and the town is not rich, but the people there like their zoo a lot. First the town obtained/donated additional land ca 7 years ago and now, finally, the zoo got ca 3mio Euro from EU funds and the town added another 2mio, to build exhibits on this new land. The last part of this big investition will be a new reptile house in 2014 (or early 2015).

The zoo received their first ever striped hyena.

The 5 years old female is called LEXI. She came in August from Twycross, but is still very shy and doesn´t go outside during opening hours. She was born in Sharjah Breeding Centre, UAE. The 4 years old male HUTCH is sheduled to arrive from Abu Dhabí within weeks, to form a pair with her. There has been no opening ceremony of the new hyena exhibit at Jihlava, but visitors are allowed to visit it now.

The zoo experienced an animal theft case - 3 Rodriguez flying foxes and 1 african spurred tortoise dissapeared over night.

Demoiselle Crane pair hatched 1 chick.

    Lowland Nyalas have 2 calves.

Greater Flamingos laid 18 eggs, but I don´t know the actual number of raised chicks (during my visit in May, there were 8 chicks and still cca 8 eggs on nests).

The exhibit of Common Seals is going through a facelift. All 3 seals have to spend several weeks in pygmy hippo pool - one female seal is due in July and should deliver in the current pigmy hippo pen, lets see if it goes well.

My latest info says it will open on 12th of December.

Planned animals in wet tropical section - Siamese crocs, African dwarf crocs, several monitor lizard species, anacondas, turtles, free tamarins, sloth, hutia, three banded armadillo, basilisc etc. Chinese Alligators coudnt be sourced from EEP, they might be replaced by another species. I dont know what will be in desert section.

Children of local Roma (gypsy) minority that their parents often don´t send to school. Their families are poor, have a lot of children, live in "social housing", most adults are unemployed and live of welfare and child subsidies. They would be called chavs in the UK, I guess.

EDIT: the linked article has two wrongs.

First, Jihlava keeps only Greater Flamingos. The attached photos are clear enough for identification. And if the editor lacks any knowledge, why to add WRONG info at all? Huh. Yeah, sometimes it had other species for a few months, when other zoo has abandoned egg, it is often sent to Jihlava, to be adopted by some of their pairs, because their flock is famous for their excelent parental care. But after weaning of, it is returned back to its former zoo.

And second, the killed flamingo was not a survivor of Prague zoo floods. I have no idea where this newspaper took it from. The killed flamingo was an adult bird, imported in 2001 from Tansania, never left Jihlava, very experienced breeding bird.. Loss of such valuable bird is bitter, but no need to make up fairy-tales.

@Jana You are obviously not familiar with The Daily Mail, they like to specialise in the dramatic and shocking. They also like their alternative facts too...
