    About 1.710.000 men, women and children visited the zoo in 2016, about 50.000 more than 2015.

    First offspring 2017: Sunbittern hatched at Gondwanaland

    The Zoo announced that 3 apes are pregnant at the moment: Bonobo YASA (* at Tycross Zoo, 1997, KAKOWET II x DIATOU), Sumatra-Orang-Utan PADANA (* at Leipzig Zoo, 1997, WALTER x PINI) and Sumatra-Orang-Utan RAJA (* at Leipzig Zoo, 2003, WALTER x PINI).

    @leone: at what stage is the new Himalaya area?
    Response: The snowleopard breeding pair has been taken off-exhibit recently and are presently held along the Tiger Taiga. Over summer the new Himalaya area should be completed (including the large flight aviary for vultures and waldrapp ibis). A smaller side aviary is to hold Himalayan pheasants (monal et al ..).

    @leone, as in new projects?
    That would have to be an affirmative. The Carnivora rows and the Prezwalski horse exhibit / stables and the owls/pheasant aviaries have been vacated and partially already demolished to enable Zoo Leipzig to start on building the next phase of the South American area (next to entrance area and Flamingo/Ibis aviary at the frontside of the zoo).

    So just to confirm; the apes at the zoo currently consist of :

    Orang-utans = 3.5 (Bimbo Suaq Batak, Pini Dokana Padana Raja Tanah, plus Padana and Raja's unborn babies)
    Gorillas = 1.4 (Abeeku, Kibara Kumili Diara Kianga)
    Chimpanzees (group A) = 8.11 (Robert Frodo Lome Lobo Kofi Bangolo Acibo Ohini, Fraukje Corry Riet Natascha Dorien Maja Sandra Swela Zira Tai Kisha)
    Chimpanzees (group B) = 1.5 (Alex, Jeudi Frederike Daza Hope Bambari)
    Bonobos = 6.5 (Joey Jasongo Kuno Kasai Yaro Tayo, Yasa Lexi Luiza Gemena Fimi, plus Yasa's unborn baby)

    Is this correct?

    Apparently Kumili is also pregnant, meaning that all but the chimps are due to welcome babies this year!!

    IIRC, the bilbies are going to be housed in the tunnel to Gondwanaland.

    Himalaya will have cohabitation red panda - musk deer, the aviary for griffon vultures, the mountain side for snow leopards and a second aviary - if I am not mistaken for pheasants & Co -.
