Looks like I'll be back to Leipzig in 2020 then! Probably the best aquarium I've ever been to in a zoo, as long as the renovations keep the awesome number of obscure freshwater species I'll be very happy.
As is typical of aquarium renovations, they are probably going to end up with fewer and bigger tanks. And if this holds true, it will mean some reduction in species since not all species can live together. But even in their newer developments, Leipzig still has a pretty good track record of keeping rare species (for example Chacoan peccaries in the new South American area), so I'm not nervous. I agree with you that it's among the better "modest" zoo aquariums (I've not seen any of the huge million-dollar zoo aquariums like Afrykarium and Burgers' Ocean).
Somewhat overdue …, although always loved the old building. It includes some expansion as well, so looking forward to 2020+!!!
The entire group of African penguins (21 animals) was shipped to Berlin Tierpark. In 2021 the zoo will start to keep Humboldt penguins again (a group of 100-150 birds is scheduled in the long term).
Two Bearded emperor tamarins were born, the second twin birth this year. The zoo startet to hand over the majority of fish species of the aquarium to other zoos. Only a number of fresh water fish will remain at the zoo until the reconstruction is finished. Additionally the domestic animals from the petting zoo are going to leave to make space for the second part of 'South America'.
Two Hamyln monkey were shipped to Aschersleben Zoo (I suspect TOSEEN [13] or DEXTER [11] and ANITA [22]).
Leipzig Zoo will take over the conservation project of Cat Ba langurs in Vietnam in 2019, intensify its support for the Anoas in the Nantu Forest in Sulawesi and funding a study on the population of large predators in Ethiopia.
