A new young Meerkat group (3,1) arrived. @vogelcommando And all 16 Kirk's Dik-diks born to one brace (*in Hannover in 2010) survived.
Without knowing, I picked the worst day of the year to visit Zoo Leipzig : Germany Unity Day. I arrived at 9AM, the place was already packed. Little did I know that 3 hours later it will take me 30 minutes to go by foot from the start of Pongoland to the restaurant after it. Problem is, all the paths are not made to handle that many people, at some point, I was with 40+ persons in the Giraffe House. Off to a bad start, I had a hard time enjoying the zoo because of this. I was pretty mad so even the zoo itself I didn't find as good as I expected, BUT as the day went on, after the 2pm peak the zoo started getting more and more visitable and then I really enjoyed myself. Only issue I had beside the crowd was the random not as good as the others exhibits : the row of old aviaries, the small aviary in the Elephant house, the Sea lion exhibit. It's really weird going from the Kiwara Savannah, Gondawanaland and Pongoland to these not as good exhibits. But it means that when they'll be updated they'll probably be somewhat great. The 3d render for Feuerland looked great by the way, hard to describe and not sure I understand the priority of the zoo but it sure will be good. One thing though that struck me, the zoo has great ideas, great exhibits and many things are comparable to Zürich that I visited 4 days ago. The big difference is the attention to details, Zürich does well hiding things and making sure everything looks perfect, while Leipzing sometimes lacked a bit behind.
Would you know where these animals orginated from? Given that now only two European zoos have this species.
Yep, a very very great species I sadly don't, i would assume these came from the private trade as they aren't too rare there. But the ZTL info doesn't give any info other then that they got 3 pairs
At least 6 Dwarf crocodiles (Osteolaemus tetraspis tetraspis) hatched in the quarantine building of Gondwanaland.
Yesterday the former Berlin group met the Leipzig group for the first time, much movement at the great outdoor paddock. Bull VOI NAM showed great interest in cow KEWA and already mated with her.
An Ocelot was born to PINCHU (11, born at Zoo Berlin) and DAPHNE (12, born at Zoo Aschersleben) on october 24th. It is already the 7th offspring of this brace in Gondwanaland. And a White-faced saki was born to PITTI (11, born at Zoo Peaugres) and AKA (12, born at Zoo Helsinki) on october 30th. The group living in the trees above the Giant otters grew to 6 animals.
Is there already information about when the aquarium will be reopened ? By the way-here are some pictures how the "new"aquarium will look like: Aquarium Zoo Leipzig | Ausstellungsgestaltung studio klv
I'm not saying that parts of the aquarium didn't need a modernization, but I hope it'll be a bit less of an interactive playground than the pictures make it look like.
A male Baringo giraffe (*02/2019) arrived from Prague Zoo. Female Amur tiger AKINA (*2017, TOMAK x BELLA) was shipped to Cologne Zoo.
