This is a list of the animal collections in Indonesia. I have included all the zoos, aquariums and other such public collections as I could find. Many of the collections have multiple names, both in Indonesian and in English.

The Indonesian Zoos and Aquariums Association has at least 53 member facilities, all of which I have included and marked with "[PKBSI member]". Several of the member facilities are "mini zoos" within larger theme parks or public gardens. They also include various elephant camps in Bali and such-like organisations which I wouldn't have otherwise included.

I have also included rescue and rehabilitation centres, at least most of which can be visited. There are probably a lot more of these which can be added.

The larger islands (Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan [Indonesian Borneo]) have been divided into provinces in the list below.

    Thanks.

Kinantan Zoo is the same as the Bukitinggi Zoo, and was already on the list, as were Semarang Zoo and the Lombok Wildlife Park.

However I have added in the others you have listed.

The Blanco Museum in Ubud has a small, badly housed but rather choice collection of birds in it's gardens. There is also a breeding facility for Bali and black-winged starlings that can be seen from the gardens.

Begawan Foundation is a breeding facility but it is not open to the public. It would probably be fairly easy to arrange a visit if you expressed an interest in their work, however I would discourage this unless you were really interested and could potentially assist, as this of course takes time out of their day. In any case it is hardly an great place to see an exhibit, as the aviaries are conventional breeding aviaries with very heavy mesh (a security requirement) thus birds are difficult to see. FYI we (Moonlit) support their work by funding a keeper. They are currently working with Bali and black-wing starlings and Mitchells lorikeets.

Please note: Cikananga Wildlife and Rescue Center is in Jawa Barat (West Java) and not West Sumatera.

Does Taman Buah Mekarsari counts as a zoological collection as well? It's mostly a fruit garden, but it did keep a large paddock full of Spotted Deers.

Technically it counts as a "zoological collection" because it keeps deer and the deer are exotic, but I left it off because it is just those deer there rather it being a varied collection. I left the palace in Bogor off the list for the same reason, even though the deer can be viewed by visitors.

However, now that I've said that, I realise that several of the facilities I did include are also housing only a single species (e.g. orangutans or dolphins) so I might add them into the list anyway.

In my opinion the important thing is do people come to see the deer or do they come to see the palace or fruit trees and the deer just happen to be there.

Ah yes. I was trying to figure out why I was comfortable with listing the dolphin or orangutan places but with the deer places seeming not quite right. I think this is the answer.

Quite a lot of things. Besides fruit market, there is also camping grounds, rice fields, outbound activities, and as far as I remember, even a small zoo dedicated to some actually quite exotic exhibits besides the Chitals. As far as I remember, they have hedgehogs, civets, and even some reptilians I couldn't quite remember.

But it's mostly knowns as a giant fruit garden so I guess it doesn't really count.

The same could be said for Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, as people go there to visit a museum of different cultures and parts of Indonesia. While the Komodo Museum and Freshwater Aquarium is notable, the main attraction are definitely the different venues that represent the culture of Indonesia. So the park isn't 100% a zoo, but it does have notable zoological collections. It's not called Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (Beautiful Mini Indonesian Garden) for no reason.

Oh I forgot to mention one more facility.
Royal Safari Gardens hotel is considered a different facility as well. It's only 4 km away from Taman Safari, but the resort has it's own collection with animals such as primates, birds, and Watusi as far as I remember.

To me I would ask if the animals were part of the "advertised attraction", for instance does a brochure, web site or advertisement mention that visitors can see the animals? The animals then become one of the reasons people visit, rather than just something people might or might not see if they visit for other reasons. It sounds to me from what you say that it probably does count.

This is where it gets iffy. Can non-guests come in off the street to see the animals, or is it something restricted to guests? Do people book the hotel for the animals there? I looked at their website and it is hard to tell. I also had the feeling it might be associated with Tamin Safari, maybe owned by them?

Yes. Hotel like Royal Safari Garden, Safari Lodge, Baobob Hotel, and Mara River Lodge are owned by Taman Safari. People do book the hotel for the animals.

In that case I would regard them as part of Taman Safari, not as a separate zoo.

Friendly reminder that the "marine park" part of Bali Safari & Marine Park remained as a vaporware as of now. It's like the Half-Life: Episode 3 of Indonesian zoos and aquaria.
