The pygmy hippo calf underwent surgery to treat a birth defect. Zoo Miami’s pygmy hippo calf undergoes surgery to correct birth defect
Visited the zoo today, still just as phenomenal as my first visit. Zoo Miami is excellent and i absolutely love the place, and it’s currently my third favorite zoo I have visited. I have a few updates regarding the zoo. A pack of dholes are now on exhibit in the former sloth bear yard. I only saw one sleeping by the gate to the indoor holdings, the rest were inside. The Sloth Bear was moved to an exhibit adjacent to the orangutans. I am unaware of what was there previously. The wombats are also now on exhibit in the new (renovated?) Australian Center. There is a burrow space in the yard that guests can look into from above, which is a nice touch. I did like the Australian Center quite a bit. It simultaneously breaks and follows the pattern of most Australian exhibits. There is no walkthrough kangaroo and/or wallaby yard and not everything is over-themed to hell like most others. At the same time, koalas in an all indoor glass box? Check. A barren parrot walkthrough aviary? Check. I still enjoyed how stylized it was and how well it was put together. I will upload some photos in a few days once I return from my trip.
According to an older map, I believe you are correct. Sun bears are no longer in the collection as previously mentioned.
Does anyone have some general advice or specific tips when it comes to visiting Zoo Miami? I’ll be visiting in 4-5 days for the first time in almost 10 years, and I’m very excited!
I hope you enjoy your visit! The new(ish) Florida: Mission Everglades is absolutely excellent and that will definitely be the first thing you see at the zoo. Make sure not to miss the Australia Center and swine yards, they are very out of the way and on my first visit a year ago I didn't even know I missed them. They are left of the gibbon islands near the entrance. I will forewarn you that walking the two large hoofstock loops can be very tiring, so maybe you should do these earlier in the day. Other than that, Miami is one of Americas greatest zoos so you should be in for a great time. Also, Monkey Jungle - one of the Americas only primate parks - is only about 15 minutes away from the zoo and is a very fun experience. I recommend if you have time either after the zoo or the day after/before to give it a look.
