A review here from 2016
A pair of Pallas cats have arrived.
5 "Barbary" lions born at Neuwied :
5 rare Barbary lion cubs go on show at zoo in Germany
New species at Neuwied, the Defassa waterbuck :
1 male came from Wildlands - Emmen
and 2 females from Allwetterzoo - Münster
This zoo has the Hall of South American animals opening soon, with 13 exhibits and more than 20 species on display. It is apparently the largest project in the history of the zoo but Neuwied has a very low profile here on ZooChat. Has anyone visited recently? In the book Zooming in on Europe's Zoos, which provides an excellent overview of more than 120 facilities, the zoo is listed as having 310,000 annual visitors, few indoor exhibits, but what appears to be a huge walk-through enclosure with "80 Kangaroos, 40 Wallabies and 10 Emus". Does anyone know much about the upcoming Hall of South American animals?
(I have tentative plans to visit this zoo next summer)
Coincidentally I saw a Facebook post about this just the other day. There's more info here: Zoo Neuwied - Willkommen im ZOO NEUWIED
Main attractions are tapir, anteater and a nocturnal section. A few nice smaller species in there - Kinkajou, Greater Cavy and Chacoan Mara are among the species mentioned in the writeup on the link.
