The one behind the giraffe, and those in the distance off to the right sort of made to look like the Avenue of Baobabs?

Presumably there is a ranking order in all male groups that can change over time, though to me it seems such males, particularly when they mature, mainly just live solitary lives alongside each other and it is not a bonded group in any real sense.

There is an Australian area "Australian Journey" that can be read about here: Australian Journey | Zoos Victoria

Well, the Koalas are in the "Australian Journey" section of the zoo, a distinctly non-African-themed part of the zoo. Have you been there? They have added a nocturnal house there too for native species.

There are other non-African species too, e.g. Bison and Przewalski's Horses, but the majority are African. I'm not sure if the long-term plan is for the zoo to remain like that, or if they will build a new Asian area in the future - which may be needed if they run out of space at Melbourne for their Elephants.

This is not a new area as such, the kangaroos, brolga and emu exhibit has been there for quite a few years I think (since they closed down the Volcanic Plains Walk), and the river/wetland walkway longer than that. But the addition of the nocturnal house and koalas is very new, and the name "Australian Journey" is fairly new too.

Ooh, I haven't been there in about two years! Last I recall, they had demolished the area where the kangaroos used to be to create the new entrance precinct. I guess that they have since expanded the 'Aussie Journey'.

Sounds like I need to return. I had no idea they'd done anything to the Volcanic Plains exhibit.

I'm not sure exactly where the Volcanic Plains Walk was, I never saw any sign of it (just on old maps), so I'm not sure if that area is now under the new carpark or further back than that. The Australian Journey takes up the area around the old cottage and shearing shed, and has free-ranging kangaroos, emu, brolga and bandicoots, as well as the new nocturnal house, koalas and the accommodation.
