Is there any news about Kandula? I haven't heard anything about him in a while and the suspense is killing me. Has he met any of the others yet?

Chai died at 7:30 AM today. They don't know why she died yet, and theres some tests going on right now and they will have results in a few weeks.

I bet OKC will be on the IDA worst elephant zoo list now because of this, since they have had 2 elephant deaths in two years, and because Chai and Bamboo were sent here instead of a sanctuary.

I wonder why Chai died. She was still kind of young. Does anyone know if she was suffering from arthritis or something? Maybe there was a digestive issue.

Within five minutes of Woodland Park posting about the death on Facebook the ignorant haters are already posting angry comments.

To be quite honest I feel like transferring Chai and Bamboo to OKC was a mistake. Now this is complete conjecture, of course, but I wouldn't be surprised if Malee would have still been alive if Chai and Bamboo were not transferred to OKC.

Now of course Chai probably would have passed away no matter where she went, but I feel like OKC got a bit greedy. They already had Asha and Chandra, both young females and one a proven breeder, and Asha's calves Malee and Achara, both of whom could breed in the future, and their big bull Rex to breed with all except for Achara. Even Kandula was a wise choice to breed with Achara and the other females, but did they really need two post reproductive females as well? Especially ones that we know host EEHV. Honestly, I don't really think so. I realise they have an excellent new exhibit, but I think passing Chai and Bamboo by and opting to work more on breeding their existing herd would have been a wise idea. There many many other excellent zoos that I am certain would have been thrilled to acquire Chai and Bamboo.

I like to think that God takes note of that kind of behavior and that it goes on their permanent record, and that I needn't worry about getting back at them because God will get to them sooner or later. Sorry to get all religious on you. That said it is totally not cool that they are doing that, the internet really does turn people into jerks.

Do you think that someone might like sue the zoo for this or something like that after autopsy results come back?

I have to wonder if she died of something like an aneurysm or heart problem that was idiopathic and not easily detectable or easily diagnosed.

That said given the behavior of the ar community as of late I wouldn't be surprised if someone did, even if it was for the stupidest of reasons.

Do you think that there's a chance that Malee and Chais are related?
