Information about the upcoming Asia expansion - known as: Sanctuary Asia, opening next summer. Animals include Indian rhino, red panda, Komodo dragon, langur, cassowary, crane, and even raccoon dog! Wildlife Exhibits Something else worth mentioning is that even more space, 3.5 acres to be exact, will be added to the current 4.5 acres for elephants. Would this make Oklahoma City the largest Asian elephant exhibit in the U.S.?
You're thinking of the Oakland Zoo. The tram going over the bison I believe is opening soon if it hasn't already, and the rest of the exhibits for bears, wolves, eagle, etc. will open next year. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong.
If Oklahoma City Zoo has exactly 8 acres for its elephants by next summer then I think it will be the 2nd largest elephant complex in the USA. If I'm not mistaken, Disney's Animal Kingdom has a 9.5 acre elephant exhibit...even though almost all visitors spend less than two minutes actually looking at elephants at that theme park. Here is an article from February announcing that the zoo has broken ground on Sanctuary Asia: OKC ZOO BREAKS GROUND ON MASTER PLAN EXPANSION
I noticed some items of interest in the article linked above. 1. The project is funded by a sales tax that benefits the zoo (similar to the one Fresno has). 2. Zoo admission is only $8, making this one of the best zoo deals in America. 3. The new expansion will include raccoon dogs!
