Two new male cheetahs arrived from San Diego Safari Park. The Maryland Zoo's last cheetahs (two female siblings) died from liver disease in January 2016 (both on the same week)
The zoo announced the death of its remaining African leopard (a 22-year-old male). Unlike most other "African" leopards in US zoos, this was a genuine African, imported together with his late mate from South Africa in 1995. The Maryland Zoo also has a female Amur leopard, and like all AZA zoos will now shift focus to this subspecies
The zoo now has three pink-backed pelicans. They were hatched at Disney's Animal Kingdom and have now joined Maryland's colony of African penguins and cormorants
I witnessed target training done with the zoo's giraffes yesterday. They were really trying to work on hoof placement with their male, Caesar. They were able to enforce him to lift a foot he has been having issues with and they were able to clean the other one off. They are trying to work on this training so if they need to do hoof care, they won't have to resort to anesthesia. Does anyone know if other zoos have tried this training with their giraffes?
Yes, it is practiced in various modes in other zoos. No longer the revolutionary husbandry improvement, but surely far yet from being mainstream. I do see this as the future husbandry protocol for hoof care in giraffe.
The zoo received Top Honors in Exhibit Design for Penguin Coast, which is home to (supposedly) the most African penguins at one facility in the USA, as well as four white-breasted cormorants, four pink-backed pelicans, and one gull. I agree with this one, it's the best habitat for any of the species that I've seen, and probably the best penguin habitat (all species of warm and cold weather penguins included) that I've ever seen. The zoo is building a bobcat exhibit right next to the river otter exhibit. I believe this will replace the area where the red fox and turtle used to be. The area before the river otters has been blocked off for the starting on construction.

The giraffe calf was named Willow resulting from the zoo's naming contest. Starting today, guests are allowed to view her in the giraffe barn in small groups.
Well I am thrilled for new animals at this zoo and it's a good replacement if their last polar bear, Anoki, passes away anytime soon. However, I feel bad their polar bear only allowed to be in one side of the exhibit now. It was the set up a couple years ago it when they had a male polar bear, but I think one side isn't big enough for a long use. Perhaps the two bears will be able to rotate every so often. The polar bear has been going inside lately most of the day so maybe the lack of size will not phase her.
