The zoo has released another batch of zoo-bred Night herons and added small GPS trackers on them to follow their migration into Africa.

Annual Cuvier's dwarf caiman batch of eggs started to hatch.

Greater flamingo colony kept in a walk-through aviary on fish pond bank had a good season and 29 chicks fledged. The zoo doesnt use incubators, doesnt hand-rear chicks and doesnt pinion them. 20 immature birds from the flock will go to Israel later this year.

Bewick swan pair has 6 fledged chicks.

A new moose arrived from Denmark.

European otter cubs have been sexed and they are 2,1.

One Lechwe antelope was born in September.

 

On the 1st of September a female Kafue lechwe (Kobus leche kafuensis) was born, a zoo first breeding for Hluboká!

At the start of this month 2 female Eurasian elks (Alces alces alces) arrived from Ree Park Safari.

New set of owl aviaries is under construction - finaly!

The old wooden owl aviaries were demolished few years back and their place was laying bare since, while owls were kept off-show.

Once build, it should showcaste around 10-12 owl species that live or are vagrants in our country.

 

The zoo lost its young moose female. Visitors have fed her pastry. She died due to quick inflamation of digestive system. Keepers found her lying on ground in agony and vet coudnt help her anymore. She was awaiting twins. She arrived last autumn from Denmark and was big hope for their moose breeding program.

Last week a female Eurasian elk (Alces alces alces) died due to severe bloody inflammation of the small intestines and the front section of the large intestine which was caused by eating of inappropriate food. Sadly she was also halfway through her pregnancy and was expecting twins.

@Jana did bring this up in the Zoo Ohrada news thread last week putting a link to the same picture of one of the moose fawns lost by this incident. Are zoo Ohrada and Zoo Hluboká the same facility or are they not?

Indeed, Hluboká and Ohrada re the same facility
Jihočeská (Southbohemian) Zoo Hluboká is current official name, Zoo Ohrada or Zoo Ohrada Hluboká was formally used in the past and informally even today.
"Ohrada" is name of smal hunting lodge next to zoo (zoo was originally some sort of "menagerie" attached to it), while "Hluboká" is name of town

 

Twin Himalayan Brown bears born in January.

 

These cubs were vaccinated and sexed. They are a male and a female.

Lets pray they will find some decent accomodation in future. European zoos dont have capacity for captive bred brown bears, unfortunately.

 

The current donkey and pony paddocks in central area should be rebuilt for Przewalski's horses (new species). Construction should start at the end of 2023 year.

New annual report is out.
Aside of currently ongoing rebuilding of owl aviaries and by Jana reported Przewalski horses it also mention reconstruction of otter exhibit and new exposition for bush dogs (without details, but these bush dogs could be located in place of old bear exhibit, next to existing South american complex?)

 

Bush dogs will be in the place between pheasant aviaries and tropical house. A new playground for kids will be in the place of former brown bear enclosure.

 

The reconstructed owl aviaries will probably open soon. The zoo posted on FB how volunteers are planting vegetation around them. I really hope they will have short-eared owls again, one of my favourite species and usually only rarely kept in rescue stations in form of single handicaped birds.

Spring season brought usual babies - Greater flamingos, Alpine marmots, sousliks, Eurasian spoonbills or common pochards.

Golden eagles have one chick on nest, third year in a row this pair breeds. When they had bred for first time, I was hoping a bit this could be first step in future reintroduction program in Šumava NP. But short recherse later it was clear at least one (if not both) of the adult birds at Hluboka is of Central Asian origin, a berkut. So clearly unsuitable to be rewilded. Will be sold soon to falconers I guess.

 

Owl aviaries are open. My first impression - used grey construction material (cement on chipboard) is ugly as hell. And the area needs time for vegetation to grow properly. But - short-eared owls are back, yay!

Surely has to be one of the best collections of European owls in the continent - great news that the short-eared owls are still there.
