2 Southern Screamer chicks hatched recently. Čája Morgana and Chaco, the Southern Tamanduas had a baby on June 14th. Chaco came from the wild in Paraguay and Morgana from Faunia in Spain. The baby is the 13th tamandua born in the history of the zoo. ZOO Olomouc 3.3 Reindeers have been born at the zoo. The father is a male from Brno who came to the zoo 2 years ago. ZOO Olomouc On April 26th, a female giraffe was born to Samantha. She has been named Sarifa. ZOO Olomouc
According to web page there is planned new exposition around the pond in central part of zoo - African marshes, mentioned are red river hogs, monkeys (some ceropithecus species), birds (mentioned pelicans and secretary b.) and possibly some other, yet unspecified species. Works may start this year.
The zoo has nice busy summer season so far. July attendance was 35%! higher than same month last year, and August is also doing good. All in all, they sold only 20.000 tickets less cumulatively than last year the same date. If weather helps, the zoo could actually compensate its lockdown loss of revenue before year end, in theory. In the same press release, the zoo complains that visitors in last few months are much more unruly than usually. People feeding and petting animals, entering closed places, littering, smoking etc. But Olomouc is not the only one, many Czech zoos are complaining about that change of crowd behaviour recently.
Former rock hyrax exhibit on the upper level of the giraffe house has been replaced by reptile tanks. Current line up is following: Panther chameleon Gila monster Mertens' water monitor Russian rat snake Red-tailed green rat snake Beauty rat snake Green keel-bellied lizard (Gastropholis prasina) Moroccan eyed lizard Madagascan hissing cockroach Green basilisk Dumeril's boa Sun beatle (Pachnoda Iskuulka) Link
Olomouc is yet again the first Czech zoo to publish its Annual report, some notable bits from it: Last fishing cat was sent to Exmoor, the zoo wants to continue with them, but that requires new exhibit. They have problems obtaining new "barbary" lion female for their male, due to the big presence of Olomouc-bred lions throughout Europe. Musk ox female gave birth month after arriving to the zoo, but the calf didn't survive. Red pandas should arrive this year, replacing coatis. Pair of Siberian cranes arrived.
The zoo completed a new Carpathian lynx enclosure and 1,1 lynx returned. It replaced the old lynx pen, but is bigger and the former elevated wooden visitor path has been removed. New species is southern three-banded armadillo, with 1,1 that arrived from Jihlava and Opole. Like every spring time, gemsbok herd has new calves. 4,3 has been born so far and 2 dams are expecting soon.
A pair Black storks has build a nest on the ground of their aviary and laid 4 eggs. Between June 11 and June 14 3 chicks hatched and are doing great .
The zoo will open all its animal houses again tommorow, but with limited numbers. It had been more cautious that other local zoos and so their pavilions were closed till now. The children favourite place within the zoo - Králíkovství (kingdom of rabbits) has been closed this week. The area with tame rabbits that could be petted by visitors existed for 5 years but incosiderable behaviour of some people while handling the rabbits has forced the zoo to give up the idea at last. This is another measure in a series of complains I hear from other local zoos that visitors behaviour has changed for worse in last 2 years.
Amur leopard cats have a new litter, born on 3th June this year. It is 2 males and one female and they are on show with their parents. Not mentioned here before is arrival of a new male Amur Leopard Akeno from Germany in June. He will get a nice young female from Kobenhaven Zoo soon.
A nice young female Amur Leopard CORA from Denmark arrived on 14th August and soon will leave quarantine areal and get on show.
The honeybadger cub born in April was finally caught by keepers and sexed - it is a male. It is the second cub for its parents - Akin and Kali.
Number of blacktip reef sharks in collection has increased. The aquarium tank in cat house has now 3 sharks on show - their long-term resident old female, a female recently arriving from Hodonin zoo (their aquarium got leveled by tornado in June) and now a 3-years old female arrived from a shopping centre "Rozkvět" in Brno where she simply grew too big for her show enclosure so needed to move. The zoo also bought 3 little sharks early this year, who now live backstage and are 60 cm long. I don´t think Olomouc has place for 6 grown sharks, that current tank is in my opinion too small even for a single grown blacktip shark. I guess (and hope) some will be made available to other collections soon.
Cape coral snakes (Aspidelaps lubricus) have bred again, this time 9 babies hatched. The species can be seen inside their Kalahari pavilion. New domestic species on show is a pair of dromedaries.

Not sure whether I translated the message correctly, but I believe a new male will arrive from a zoo in Switzerland at the end of April. Could someone confirm this? Source: Instagram of Zoo Olomouc (01/03/2022) Login • Instagram
