Vietnamese sika deer herd has 4 youngsters born this year. Ostrava zoo is also a koordinator of the breeding program and looks for an European zoo that would be interested to keep a bachelor herd, yet without success.

Sclater blue-eyed lemur born in March this year has been sexed and it is a male. Its mother is already 23 years old.

And an update on local reintroduction of Golden Eagles that Ostrava zoo helped with more than a decade ago: two pairs incubated eggs this year in Libavá (army training ground NE from Olomouc), but only one pair managed to hatch a chick. Still, it is the first chick in free nature in Czechia in 4 years. (Unfortunatelly, reintroduced eagles in that program had pretty high mortality - they were shot, poisoned, electrocuted or they just dissappeared without trace despite functioning tracking device.)

I do not know anything about that. Recently, only the old African animal house was repaired. (giraffes, zebras, ostriches, antelopes ...)

Thank You. Are they suitable for breeding? I hope so. The house with the paddock is really great.

Some new bird exhibits are comming close to completition and would open next year:
    - A row of 5 aviaries for local species of owls (Ural owl, Tengmalm's owl, Barn owl, Little owl, +1).
    - New aviary for Eastern imperial eagles.
    - Walk-through aviary for King vultures (maybe water birds will be mixed in).

Construction of two new larger exhibits can start very soon because the zoo has secured funding. One is for lion-tailed macaques. The second one for white-cheeked gibbons and hog deer. Construction should take ca 2 years (in best case) so planned opening is late 2021 or 2022.

Using the "two crowns from ticket" policy (from every ticket sold, two crowns from the ticket price go to a separate bank account and at the end of year zoo splits the amount raised between various conservation projects) Zoo Ostrava raised a bit over 46 000€. The money was sent to these conservation projects:

    • The Kukang Rescue Program
    • Derbianus Conservation
    • Tonkin Snub-Nosed Monkey Conservation Programme
    • Coffee and Primate Conservation - Javan Gibbon conservation
    • Saola Working Group
    • Turtle Foundation - Leatherback sea turtle conservation in Indonesia
    • Programme Sahamalaza - lemur conservation on Madagascar
    • The Endangered Primate Rescue Center (EPRC) Vietnam
    • Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program (SOCP)
    • Green-Books.org
    • Vulture Conservation
    • Repatriation and protection of Zoogoneticus tequilla in Mexico
    • KASI Foundation
    • SEMIX - protection of local biodiversity in Czech Republic and management of valuable locations

The last chimpanzee born at Ostrava that survived was 20 years ago. There have been babies born since who survived a month or were stillborn, but never a long-term survivor since Bambari in 2000.
