Today gorilla "Ukiwa" (born at Wilhelma Stuttgart on April 9th, 1983) gave birth to her first offspring, unfortunately the baby was a stillbirth. A second female, "Grace" (born at Dublin Zoo on November 28th, 1992), is still pregnant.
Sad news but good that new male 'Vimoto' is proving imself as a breeding male where 'TamTam' couldn't as he was infertile. As a result its quite late for a first birth but hopefully better luck next time. I'm a bit surprised to hear that 'Grace' is pregnant as I thought she had socialisation problems- but evidently not with 'Vomoto' though. Or is that another female?
A new okapi house is being built at the zoo, costing half a million euros, it will house an okapi being imported from London zoo in September, which animal, i don't know. Zoo Wuppertal: Neuanlage für Okapis - Geschenk des Zoo-Vereins Wuppertal e.V.
What a wonderful news. I visited the zoo on Sunday and it's a pity that there bonobos and chimpanzees have to live in such small and adequate indoor enclosures. Do you know when the zoo will start to build the bonobo enclosure? And what about chimpanzees? Will they get a new enclosure? Or will they age and die in the tiny indoor enclosure?
The zoo plans to built a small outdoor enclosure for the bonobo troop in 2012 (about 200m²). The chimpanzee male will die in the tiny indoor enclosure, the female is going to go back to Münster after his death (he is 43 years old). The chimpanzee will nit get a new enclosure.
If this is the case then it is Rab born to Elila and Dicky. Couldn't they move Mbuti and move Rab elsewhere?
A four year old okapi male from Cologne Zoo will follow. The bigger part of the fairy blue penguins, imported from Taronga Zoo, unfortunately died.
They died from a bacterial infection, a similar way the fairy blue penguins from Cologne and Bristol died at Wuppertal Zoo two years ago. Only sever or eight penguins are still alive. In my opinion that is a kind of bad management.
It was mentioned on another thread that she was never pregnant. I do not know which version is correct...
Does anyone know what the enclosure is like? Also, I tried to find a map of the zoo on their website but couldn't find one, does anyone know where I could find a map?
Do you know what it was? I think they're usually quite susceptible to aspergillosis (a fungal infection), especially after the stresses involved with the big move and changes in diet & environment.
