I've been told that this is one of Spain's better zoos. Can anyone give me any further information about it? Also, does anyone here have the "key statistics" on the Zoobotanico Jerez? That is: (a) Number of Species (b) Number of Specimens (c) Size -- hectacres (d) Annual Attendance Thanks!!
This is the only public zoo that is part of the iberian lynx breeding program. (All of the other breeding centers are private compounds built specifically for that purpose). UNFORTUNATELY, they are not on public display.
^^ The others breeding centres for Iberian Lynx in Spain are builds with public money, I'm sure at 100%
Jerez is a nice zoo, but don't expect anything fancy or modern though. I've uploaded a number of pictures to the gallery a while ago. that might give you an idea of that it looks like. Most of the zoo looks a bit old and small. I haven't been to a lot of spanish zoos (madrid zoo & faunia, barcelona zoo & aquarium) so i can't really tell you if this is one of spains best.
Hi, Zoo Jerez really is not something special. The Spanish Lynx program does work there but not even the employees enter the exposition - it´s impossible to see them there. Jump to my this year´s gallery and you can read my opinion there: txecoloco | Exkurze (ES): Zoo Jerez de la Frontera (?ervenec 2009) ? rajce.net Best Wishes, Petr
The zoo has bred its first Iberian lynx, from initially 2 born, 1 kitten has so far survived after being born this week. Zoobotanico Jerez :: 30 abril 2010: Nace la primera camada de linces ibéricos en el Zoobotánico
Jerez zoo have great conservation projects, not only the lynx breed program, they manages the Egyptian vulture or the imperial Spanish eagle and others.
Since tomorrow, we will be able to see iberian linx in their new exhibit on show!!. This is the first time this specie can be seen in a zoo.
Not completly true. London Zoo recieved April 10 1867 a specimen of this species, but true only few of us have had the pleasure to see this animal
I shall had that Lisbon kept them on-show until 2005/2006 too. Can´t wait to see if they are really going to be on-show.
Someone call 911 - I just had a heart attack. (And yes as some of you know I actually did see one in the wild a couple years ago, but not a clear photo as it was in the dark with a flashlight). Now I have a flight booked to Europe already for April, no time for Spain this trip, but this throws me for a loop. I may have to do some major rearranging...
@ Alesmos - Do you know if it will be a new exhibit starting tomorrow (or just put them in an old exhibit)? I tried reading their news release (I know a fair amount of Spanish) and it seemed like it was saying the cat will be on exhibit starting tomorrow but they will be introducing a new exhibit in the coming weeks. Also, if you go and can post photos on ZooChat we would all be very appreciative!
I tought you already knew it, that´s why i asked you the "Plans for 2013" thread if you were coming to the peninsula. I believe it´s an old exhibit for bongos that was renovated. There´s a forum called zoosdelmundo with fellow spanish zoo fanatics and one will visit the zoo today. Here´s the link: http://zoosdelmundo.mforos.com/

That sound you hear is the sound of Jerez moving several places up my European priorities list! Thanks for posting.
