    Temperature 7F, Winds NE at 35 MPH.

    1) Common Raven. Unsurprisingly so.

    Anybody’s guess whether the Red or Arctic Fox will be my first Mammal this year....saw several of both last year/yesterday...time, as it is want to do, will tell.

    Probably tomorrow when the winds are forecasted to lay down a bit.

    Despite travelling more than 200 kilometers yesterday I only had three additions since it was already dark when I did so. My fist bird being the most common species in the Netherlands, a common blackbird. Today was my first ''real'' birding day and just like last year I had the honor of starting off my birding year with a lifer!

    Today was the first real birding day. We first went after a rare vagrant diver (one far from the coast), then we had a nice trip in a local area which yielded a long-awaited lifer. To finish the day we searched for a rare duck. Today turned out very succesfull, with 44 species spotted.

    I was also a little impeded by the wind today but the afternoon settled down nicely and I was able to put together a decent haul from a tour of local sites - Ogston Reservoir, Cromford Canal, Carsington Water, Darley Dale, Big Moor and Shillito Wood - with Carsington's diver and Darley Dale's Hawfinch the highlights.

    No real birding today, but did pick up a few new ones for the year while going to the city and was surprised by a green woodpecker in my own backyard, the earliest in the year I've ever seen one.
