I shall visit about 3 continents less...

However, I've got some nice plans for next year and if they work out I may have an even better year than this year. I will stay in Europe though (unless something unexpected happens), so I won't be disqualified. :p

My final list contains 260 species of birds of which 65 were lifers (25% lifers), 24 mammals with 8 lifers (33.3%), 15 herptiles with 4 lifers (26.7%), 5 fish with 3 lifers (60%) and 195 invertebrates which were all new to my list because I just started the list this year. I expect next year to have significantly less lifers for birds and mammals because this year I "cleaned up" most of the reasonably common ones in the Netherlands I still had to find. I hope I can do the same with herptiles next year.

A quick walk by the Manzanares made me lie but I'm not too unhappy about that!

31/12/2018 (Somewhere near the Manzanares River)
    BIRDS:
143 - Egyptian goose, Alopochen aegyptiaca
144 - Common kingfisher, Alcedo atthis

These, however, should be the last additions unless something pops up by my window. What a nice bird to end this wonderful year with.

I meant to do that too. But one last addition first:
    Birds
    225. Pacific Koel

Of the 225 species of birds 64 were lifers (28%), of the 17 mammals 9 were lifers (53%), of the 14 reptiles 5 were lifers (36%), of the 391 species of fish I saw a total of 49 were lifers (12.5%), and of the 54 inverts 16 were lifers (30%).

Interesting statistics! I'll post mine as well:
    329 birds (126 lifers, 38%), 20 mammals (7 lifers, 35%), 21 herps (16 lifers, 76%), 4 fish (3 lifers, 75%), 84 inverts (51 lifers, 61%).

I'm very glad with my total for birds! At the start of the year I was originally aiming for a year total of at least 200 birds (something I had barely missed out on doing within Europe in 2017). When I reached that goal so early on in the year and started planning the Spain trip I quickly realized 300 might be possible as well (something I had barely missed out on doing worldwide in 2017) - and then I got there too!

This year has been very rewarding to me on many levels. In 2017 I basically got through all of the common species in my country but was still missing a few relatively easy ones - I've now basically cleaned up all of those as well. I did some limited twitching last year, but definitely developed a taste for it over the course of 2018 and have seen a few amazing birds I probably won't see again soon.

If everything goes to plan, 2019 should be even better still! :D
I'll be cheating by visiting multiple continents... :p

Figured I'd lay out my statistics as well!
222 birds (69 lifers, 31%) of which 176 were seen in the Netherlands, 14 mammals (1 lifer, 7%), 9 herps (2 lifers, 22%) and 56 inverts which I only started semi-seriously listing this year.

Just like Anton I was aiming for 200 birds in the year which I rounded off quite nicely thanks to a short visit to the United States. I've certainly gotten more experienced in birding over the year and became a bit more fanatic in twitching. In 2019 I'm hoping to do more birding and strive for even higher numbers.

I'm excited to see the surprises 2019 holds! :D

Seeing everyone else is doing it, and even though it is embarrassing for me:

My total was 57 birds with no lifers (0%), and 4 mammals with no lifers (0% - although one of those mammals was a Leopard Seal, which is pretty cool).

I didn't leave Wellington at all during the year, hence the low numbers.

I just checked my lists and this is not only my lowest year-list ever (unsurprisingly) but also my lowest NZ year-list, even for those years where I've spent half the year out of the country! It's also the first year where I haven't added anything to my bird life-list.

I saw a total of 424 birds, of which 28 were lifers (6.6%) and 64 mammal species of which 6 were lifers (9.3%), I don't think I have seen any new invertebrates of reptiles/amphibians this year. The low number of lifers is quite logical as I have hardly been to any new places and apart from 2 weeks in Patagonia I had 7 real wildlife watching days, 3 in Tanzania, 3 in Ethiopia and 1 in Switzerland. The lifers were however quite satisfactory as I have finally seen Leopard, Cheetah and Harbour porpoise in the wild; all 3 species that had eluded me for ages. Personal highlights in terms of birds were the Wattled crane and Schalow's turaco.

Quite a poor year in terms of birds overall, compared with 130 species in 2017. There are a few birds not on the list which I would expect to be on there, such as little egret and little grebe, but either I didn't see them anywhere or I forgot to add them. For a variety of reasons I didn't go anywhere much this year, and those places I did didn't have many birds, which accounts for the low total.

    206 birds (77 lifers, 37%), 36 mammals (11 lifers, 31%), 8 reptiles (1 lifer, 13%), 4 amphibians (1 lifer, 25%).

I did really well with birds and mammals this year compared to other years. Hopefully as I get better at this and hopefully do more wildlife-centric trips as oppose to zoo-centric trips I'll get even better totals. Herps were definitely lower than usual and lower than what I could have done, I just never really went out looking for CT natives this year. Hopefully I'll amend that this year.
