Wait is the bold suppose to mean it's a lifer? I meant it as it was a new species to the list. I've seen wild mallards hundreds of times before.

Yes, bold is supposed to signify a lifer.

A short last-minute trip to Aachen got me a few more birds! The crested tit is one I should've gotten ages ago, but the treecreeper is nice since that's one I likely wouldn't have casually encountered later in the year.

    BIRDS:
    671) European crested tit, Lophophanes cristatus
    672) Eurasian treecreeper, Certhia familiaris

I also noticed I'm only at 34 herps for the year in the overview post, so I must have forgotten to post this one (from late July):

    HERPS:
    35) Natterjack, Epidalea calamita (which oddly is the 11th amphibian - I've seen 24 reptiles)

Today I visited Tootgarook Wetlands for the first time, despite the fact I had driven past many times before. This wetlands has been saved following an extended campaign by locals, and I was very impressed. I came especially to see glossy ibis, which have only recently extended their range this far south and which I had not seen in the wild . Unfortunately most oF the wetlands were closed to visitors for two weeks due to a baiting campaign and I missed the ibis. Only two additions to this years list:

    349. White-necked heron Ardea pacifica
    350. Yellow thornbill Acanthiza nana

Spent today at the coast to tie up a bunch of loose ends that I was still missing! The crested larks were a part of the very small breeding population Belgium has left (probably less than 5 pairs) and the dusky warbler was purely coincidental - I was birding at the same place when someone had just found the bird! The rest are all somewhat irregular or otherwise not very straightforward birds of which I wasn't sure I was still going to be able to see them this year.

    BIRDS:
    673) Common goldeneye, Bucephala clangula
    674) Caspian gull, Larus cachinnans
    675) Crested lark, Galerida cristata
    676) Dusky warbler, Phylloscopus fuscatus
    677) Purple sandpiper, Calidris maritima
    678) Brant goose, Branta bernicla

    (Benelux: 229)

It is actually up to you. Generally it means first time on you life list. However if you just started your life list yesterday, that means everything you see, even if you also saw them the day before. I only started my list about 18 months ago. I did go back and add animals from old trip lists, photos and where I had a direct recollection of seeing them. That way common animals like black ducks (the mallard equivalent in Australia) went right on. However it is entirely up to you.

After missing these at least 3 or 4 times now and seeing an escaped bird early this year, I've now finally seen a real, unringed red-breasted goose! If there was any one nemesis bird of mine this would probably have been it, so I'm glad to finally have rectified this. I'd love to eventually see them better than today, though, as it was already very dark when I finally saw the bird.

    BIRDS:
    679) Red-breasted goose, Branta ruficollis

    (Benelux: 230)
