For now my ruling is that yes, they count as Japanese squirrels. If anyone puts forth any proof that they are legitimately different and not Hokkaido squirrels (the Japanese red squirrel ssp), then people can change that listing in their list accordingly.

So @Mr. Zootycoon if you saw the Japanese squirrels at Best, and then see red squirrels, they count separately :)

A longer update to follow by the end of this week, but I am still busy zoo visiting, including the zoo that probably gives the best yield outside of the Czech Republic....

Unfortunately Prevost's Squirrel was off-show as Taman Indah is closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. No additions from Gaiazoo which I visited earlier (dormice were no-shows and the hyrax were replaced by a second enclosure for meerkats. They have now at least 25 meerkats in Gaiazoo!)

I think only Amersfoort can theoretically yield a reasonably good list of additions in the Netherlands. But because of the limited access to the nocturnal house even that might not be as good as I hope.

After almost half a year of no zoos, I figured I'd go to two of my favourites! Wasn't going with this challenge in mind so I forgot to go out of my way for some species (Chacoan mara etc), but still managed to more than quadruple my score for the year so I feel like I did okay!
