Visited Avifauna today for the second time this year ( in company of 2 very nice people - one being my wife and the other being a ZooChatter ;) ) and found some of the species I missed on my first visit. Because of the bad weather it was quite dark in the Tropical halls and taking photos was not easy - that is why some of the pictures I've up-loaded already into the Avifauna-gallery are of such a poor quality ( :( ). With the 5 new species I at least have past the 100-mark !

After reviewing photos from Zoo Miami, it seems I did not actually see yellow-faced mynah, but rather a hybrid between common and something else. Unfortunately, this throws every number of mine after 122 off, but my apologies. The quoted post has the correct numbers.

    North Carolina Zoo 11/6/17:
    156. Blue-winged leafbird Chloropsis cochinchinensis
    157. Scarlet-faced liocichla Liocichla ripponi
    158. Yellow-rumped warbler Setophaga coronata
    159. Golden-crested myna Ampeliceps coronatus
    160. Summer tanager Piranga rubra
    161. Red-eyed vireo Vireo olivaceus
    162. Hermit thrush Catharus guttatus
    163. Horned lark Eremophila alpestris
    164. House finch Haemorhous mexicanus

    Yes, here it is:

I was rather hopeful it was a yellow-faced mynah (which the zoo does have on exhibit), but when I went back and looked at it I quickly found it wasn’t. It is interesting nonetheless.

Looking over these lists and my notes again, it would appear as if I missed a species I saw on my second visit to Prague, because I mistook it for a very similar species I thought I had already seen this year...
    269) Sunda whistling thrush, Myophonus glaucinus

...And ironically enough, when I did finally see that species I mistook the Sunda whistling thrush for, I still didn't realize it was the first time I had seen that species that year!

    270) Blue whistling thrush, Myophonus caeruleus

Two very stupid additions on my part, though I'm glad I sorted it out! I wish I had known earlier that the two weren't the same species, however, as it turns out I don't have any decent pictures of the M.glaucinus, which is the only individual of its species in Europe...

    Damn...
You posted this just after I left, and I love birds. I'm sure I won't win (I wouldn't have even if I'd been participating; I just would have made more note of the passerines at the places I've been), but this gives me a reason to see those zoos I've been putting off going to before the end of the year, and also to pay attention to the small songbirds which (with a few exceptions like honeycreepers) I don't usually pay much mind.

Unfortunately I don't remember more than a couple of the passerines I saw at San Antonio, and I think there may have been a pair of cardinals at the Austin Nature and Science Center, but this gives me an reason to go back to both places (since I'm not sure about species for the passerines I do remember from San Antonio, I'm going to skip them). There's also a couple of passerines that I think I saw at the Denver Zoo which I'm not including because I can't place the exhibit I saw them in.

    Any rate...
    Austin Nature and Science Center
    1. Raven (marked as common raven Corvus corax but probably fan-tailed raven C. rhipidurus based on the fact that it was legally imported and staff described it as an "African raven.")
    2. Northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos)
    3. Great-tailed grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus)
    4. Blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata)

    Denver Zoo

    6. Snowy-crowned robin-chat (Cossypha niveicapilla)
    7. Pekin robin (Leiothrix lutea)
    8. Blue dacnis (Dacnis cayana)
    9. Crested oropendola (Psarocolius decumanus)
    10. Royal starling (Lamprotornis regius)
    11. Chestnut-backed thrush (Geokichla dohertyi)
    12. Violaceous euphonia (Euphonia violacea)

I went back to the San Antonio Zoo today, and managed to see almost all of the passerines identified on signs, with all of the exceptions being because the Zoo closes at nine in December bot the Hixon Bird House still closes at five and I didn't realize this, so I had less than half an hour in it. I also saw at least five species that weren't signed (not counting ones where the signs were elsewhere), which I'm marking with an asterisk, though I'm confident I identified all of them correctly except possibly the orange-cheeked waxbill. (There are several drab-bodied estrildid finches with reddish faces and I identified it based on it being the only such finch that the zoo's Wikipedia page mentions.)

I made a note of where I saw these birds since several were in the wrong place based on their signs, so in the unlikely event someone goes to San Antonio this winter and wants to find them, you can (the black-throated magpie jays are also outside the South America exhibit, but I didn't see them until I was on my way out). Miraculously, I was able to decipher my own handwriting for every single bird. Somewhat surprisingly there were only two cases of overlap with the Denver Zoo: the pekin robin and royal starling, likely because the Denver Zoo had so relatively few passerines to begin with and passerines also constituted most of the birds on exhibit which I failed to see.

Speaking of the Denver Zoo, I realized just after the editing window passed that I'd forgotten the spangled cotinga I saw at the Denver Zoo, so I'm starting my list with that. (If I'm ordering in the order I saw them it should actually go between the thrush and euphonia, but ... close enough.)

I have four more additions to end the year:

    Philadelphia Zoo
    60) African Long-Tailed Shrike Urolestes melanoleucus

    Staten Island Zoo
    61) Green Oropendola Psarocolius viridis
    62) White-Headed Buffalo-Weaver Dinemellia dinemelli

    Magic Wings Butterfly Conservancy
    63) Red-Cheeked Cordon-Bleu Uraeginthus bengalus

Unfortunately I did not get nearly as many passerines as I was planning due to all of my travel plans being pushed into 2018 :p

If everyone would kindly post their final tallies at the end of the year that would be helpful, if not I'll just go through the thread on the 31st.

My Hail Mary pass was more like a poorly-aimed toss:

    Dallas World Aquarium 12/22/17:

    165. Red bird-of-paradise Paradisaea rubra
    166. Peruvian burnished buff tanager Tangara cayana cayana
    167. Panamanian silver throated tanager Tangara icterocephala oresbia
    168. Guianan red cotinga Phoenicircus carnifex
    169. Peruvian blue-naped chlorophonia Chlorophonia cyanea longipennis
    170. Panamanian red-capped manakin Ceratopipra mentalis iginifera
    171. Golden-headed manakin Ceratopipra erythrocephala erythrocephala
    172. Panamanian golden-collared manakin Manacus vitellinus vitellinus
    173. Northern swallow tanager Tersina viridis occidentalis
    174. Red-rumped cacique Cacicus haemorrhous haemorrhous/pachyrhynchus
    175. Guianan cock-of-the-rock Rupicola rupicola
    176. Long-wattled umbrellabird Cephalopterus penduliger
    177. Passerini’s tanager Ramphocelus passerinii
    178. Crimson-backed tanager Ramphocelus dimidiatus

    Fort Worth Zoo 12/23/17:

    179. European starling Sturna vulgaris
    180. Eastern meadowlark Sturnella magna

    Total: 180

This year I’d been hoping to make 150, so I was glad to do so. I formed my lifelists during this challenge, so I’m not sure how many birds were lifers, but I’d say around 90. This is the first year I’ve really been into birds, with this challenging being one of a few contributing factors.

    Good game, everybody!

It is further worth noting that - as mentioned in this thread since my last post - had I visited Plzen a few months later I could have also counted most of those 36 species :p as many have now gone on-display!

Best get on with updating my list.....
