We were planning on visiting soon but didn't have time last weekend. I finished work at 4:30pm last friday and needed to be at Loch Garten by 5am on saturday. It's not too far away so might do it as a day trip or possibly combine it with edinburgh (or a decent rare bird) for a weekend trip if we can find somewhere cheap to stay.

It's about 5 or 6 miles from Five Sisters Zoo too, so that is another option :)

I would be very interested to see what you are considering as plumage differences in this case. According to HBW the species may still intergrade with O.Bakkamoena in Nepal. It may also be conspecific with O.lempeji but vocalizations suggest specific status. Have either yourself or the staff heard it call and if so do any of you have the experience to identify it positively?
It would also be helpful if you knew where this bird came from. If this individual was wild caught it would be much less likely to be a hybrid of the other species mentioned.

The animal in question at Scottish Owl Centre had a mottled crown ending slightly above the eye-line, whilst my photographs of the Indian Scops held by the World Owl Trust show a solid, almost uniformly dark crown, descending down to a point level with the lower edge of the eyes. Chest was sandy-rufous, fading into a much paler belly, whilst Indian I have observed have uniform pale-brown underparts.

All of the above, which I had observed through photographs online prior to my visit, had stirred my suspicions that this animal might be something odd - as noted before, whilst at Scottish Owl Centre I compared the animal in question to diagrams found within König & Weick whilst conversing on the matter with the senior keeper.

I did not hear it call; however the senior keeper at Scottish Owl Centre has, and told me that it did not sound right when compared to his auditory observation of Indian Scops Owl elsewhere - as for his experience, I believe he has been the senior keeper at SOC for 4 years, and prior to this worked at the World Owl Centre for roughly 6 years.

    ---

As my conversation on-site had come to the conclusion that the animal in question neither sounded nor looked right for Indian Scops Owl, to satisfy any remaining uncertainty on my return from the Scottish Owl Centre I compared my photographs of the animal at SOC with photographs of a pair of Collared which were present at Blackbrook Zoo until the mid-2000's and by all accounts are known-origin, and the images found on the following two pages:

Collared Scops-Owl (Otus lettia) | the Internet Bird Collection

Indian Scops-Owl (Otus bakkamoena) | the Internet Bird Collection

This - especially the comparison with the known-origin pair - solidified the identification.

Excellent observations, I see the differences now and the keeper hearing it call and noticing it was different makes it likely to be a true O.lettia. The HBW plates aren't very good in this case. It would be nice if the call could be recorded and compared to known O.lettia to confirm it.

We visited on Monday and after reviewing (poor) photos these are almost certainly Chaco Owls. They are both very pale birds showing little to no rufous and the facial disc having dark concentric lines. I'm not sure how Shorts wants to treat these birds because they are labeled as Strix rufipes.

Can't say I am particularly surprised - as noted in the past the majority of individuals labelled as rufipes in European collections are Chaco, or at best have some Chaco lineage :( this being one of the big drawbacks of our understanding of owl taxonomy having been much less sophisticated even relatively recently.

Another pair of recently-split taxa whose captive populations are almost certainly somewhat comprised of species-level hybrids are the Northern and Southern White-faced Owl - I suspect that the identity of many individuals on-display in Europe should really be taken with a pinch of salt.

Note that 107 has been amended from Bonelli's Eagle (Aquila fasciatus) to African Hawk Eagle (Aquila spilogaster); although labelled as the former taxon at ICBP Duncombe, I realised the individual in question was actually the latter taxon after seeing African Hawk Eagle for (I thought) the first time at Lakeland Falconry Centre.

Not sure there are many more I will be able to get; a visit to Welsh Hawking Centre, Newent ICBP, Warwick Castle or the Raptor Foundation being highly unlikely. But if I stay in the top three come the end of the challenge I will remain satisfied with how I have done :)

If we do win again this year we wont be taking part next year so that someone else can win. However TLD would only need to do Newent to draw and ZG would only need to do Scottish owl centre and Newent to win so its definitely not over yet.

Do you have photographs of this individual to verify the identification? This taxon is incredibly rare in public collections; the only place keeping it at present to my knowledge was Tierpark Berlin.

No (that is a lie, I got a photo of the mesh, so it was a brownish blob :p). Are the any (that you know of) in private collections, as I believe that is where they get most of their birds from?
