I thought the rules are if it is signed as Strix hylophila it is Strix hylophila for the challenge.

When we spoke to them on Wednesday they called it Canadian barred owl which we presumed would be strix varia as strix hylophila is a Brazilian species

They are, but for the purposes of zootierliste and my own personal interest in owl taxa it would be nice to know for sure :p

Judging by Macaw's post it would appear the collection has both taxa signposted. Of course, time will tell whether both are present; although I'd be able to get there by public transport it would be pretty pricey for just the one species, so I think it will have to wait either for yourselves to visit, or for Macaw to visit again and get a better shot.

The annoying thing is we thought of going there on the way to duncombe but decided not to because we were told the most unusual bird they had was barred owl which we'd already seen. If a good bird is found at flamborough or filey this autumn we'll try to call in. Interestingly this collection has some nice species but is not listed on zootierliste, this collection also received the savannah hawk from kielder which is unfortunately no longer held in Europe (even privately) as far as I am aware.

I don't think I saw the savanna hawk, so it could be offshow, or not present (the latter more likely, as the wouldn't be space for an aviary or outside perch where the birds are, and the they've got quite a bit if space, but that is an undeveloped field).

Unfortunately the savannah hawk died years ago.

That would have been at an older site then, as they've occupied four different sites!

Can't have been that long ago, mind you, as I saw it at Kielder in 2013 :) so it must have left, arrived in Yorkshire and died in very short order indeed!

Either that, or the individual that went down to Yorkshire wasn't the last one at Kielder.

I was told it was the only one at kielder and was 20 years old when it went to York so it wouldn't be surprising if it didn't live long after the move.

Get any decent photographs for the purposes of confirming the animal is correctly labelled? :)

Just uploaded one off my phone got better on my camera. I must admit I the bird (male) looked small I thought they were closer to Chaco owl size.

Pretty sure the identification is correct, from the photo :) they usually *are* Chaco Owl size - the ones at Tierpark Berlin certainly are - so it could well be a bit shrunken with age!

Think you will want to edit your post to include the new updates, as you've only posted your pre-Newent list :)

We've been thinking about this all day and compared lists but can't see what we've missed.

Comparing our list to ZG's theoretically we should be 6 ahead having seen the following species ZG hasn't.

    Honey Buzzard- Huxleys
Long-legged Buzzard - The Raptor Centre
Jackal Buzzard - The Raptor Centre
    Prarie Falcon - Welsh Hawking
    Crowned Hawk-eagle - Warwick Castle
    Lammergier - Warwick Castle
Rusty-barred Owl - York Bird of Prey Centre

ZG has seen Mountain Hawk-eagle which we haven't

Can anyone work out why we are on 117 and ZG is on 113?

And zoogiraffe you are missing the lappet faced vulture from newent has this gone or did you just not see it? Adding the ones on we have seen that zg hasnt after copying out his list and crossing them off as we went through ours we should be on 120 but we cannot figure out how we have gone wrong as we dont think we have missed any apart from common kestrel we seem to have not written!!

From what ZG has told me about his trip to Newent, I believe the vulture is either no longer on display, or gone entirely.
