Both zoos need these one after losing their first matches. Primates. A little refresher on the rules: You have three votes to award: you can award all three votes to one zoo, if you think it’s vastly superior in the given category, but if you think it’s closer than that then award two votes to the stronger zoo and one to the weaker zoo. Stick to the topic: each match has one category and you need to confine your decision-making and advocacy strictly to that category. No strategic voting. Vote for the zoo you honestly think deserves to win, not simply the one you like best. Doing that only breaks the game. The point of this game is to stoke debate. Argue your case for why you are voting the way you are, and why others should too. At the same time, keep an open mind and be willing to change your vote in response to a good argument. Votes are public and that means you’re free to ask people to explain why they are voting a certain way. But do it respectfully. This game is supposed to be fun. Play nice.
Dallas -Golden Lion Tamarin -Kikuyu Black-and-White Colobus -Dusky Leaf Monkey -Western Lowland Gorilla -Common Chimpanzee (non-sub) -Northern White-Cheeked Gibbon -Ring-Tailed Lemur Prague -Mexican Spider Monkey -Spix's Moustached Tamarin -Southern Pig-Tailed Macaque -Barbary Macaque -Northern Talapoin -Western Lowland Gorilla -Sumatran Orangutan -Javan Gibbon -White-Fronted Lemur -Ring-Tailed Lemur -Sunda Slow Loris So this one's Dallas with 7 vs Praha with 11 species. Primates are neither zoos strong suit, but both do ok with them. I'm going to vote 2-1 Prague on this one, simply do to the fact that Dallas has a relatively standard collection, with their only oddity (the langur) being an AZA phase-out and therefore unlikely to remain in the collection for long. Prague's Barbary Macaque enclosure is also one of the best primate habitats I have ever seen, a fraction of which can be seen here. ~Thylo
Also Emperor Tamarin, which is currently a rare species in North America (although they are trying to regrow the population now).
I've visited Dallas Zoo twice (2010 and 2015) and the primate exhibits there are quite impressive. The Lowland Gorilla and Chimpanzee habitats are excellent, but does the zoo no longer have Mandrills? (Those monkeys were shifted elsewhere at one point). Also, at one time there were 3 lemur species all together in a single exhibit. The down-sized collection in Dallas, and the very nice Prague Zoo exhibits in the ZooChat gallery, gives me the confidence to vote for the European zoo. 2-1 Prague Zoo
Afaik the Mandrills left very recently, or at least they were set to. If they're not gone now they will be before too long. ~Thylo
I've been only once at Prague and never to Dallas and to be honest, when talking about Prague, primates are not the first group you connected this zoo with. If I think however a little more about the collection I remember the very nice Oran-utang enclosure and the beautifull Javan gibbons on their island. Also liked the Northern talapoin and the Southern pig-tailed macaque. Know very little about the Dallas collection but from what I've read here I made it a 2 - 1 win for Prague.
Not sure how I managed to forget about the bushbabies and mouse lemurs but yes even more to add to Prague's list. Iirc Prague is a main breeder and distributer for Mohol Bushbaby correct? I'm pretty sure at some some of the US stock came from them. And is it the Ganzhorn's or Goodman's Mouse Lemurs they have? ~Thylo
While I am still a big fan of ABC animals (shown by my protest to anti-ABC sentiments on this website), I am going to have to give this one to Prague. Rarities are pretty much always going to win out against the more typical zoo collection of Dallas. I give this 3-0 Prague.
Although I'm not sure about their current stock as during my last visit they were signed, but the exhibit lacked any signs of their presence (no nest boxes, no food bowls,...), You did spot them or not?
On my visit on Sunday the Ganzhorn's mouse lemur was signed in a shared exhibit with Giant gumping rat, but did not show up.
We didn't - but I suspect they must still be present given the fact that the signage elsewhere in that house *was* being updated between the 23rd Sept (my first visit during the trip) and the 4th Oct (my second visit), with the removal/change of signage for one or two invertebrates and amphibians. As such, I think were the lemurs gone, the signage would have been removed or replaced.
By any chance do you know whether cologne’s lemurs are goodman’s or ganzhorn’s? And are all the goodman’s at plzen ganzhorn’s?
Cologne's lemurs are all Goodman's, as are all the lemurs identified as such at Plzen the animals at Plzen which were re-identified as Ganzhorn's are those which were previously believed to have been Grey Mouse Lemur.
