A couple of things, then. 1) TLD and Maguari have shaken my confidence somewhat in the assumption informing my vote - that Beauval is doing something unique or, at least, unprecedented. 2) It is currently 17-15 in Beauval’s favour, and casting what amounts to a deciding vote in a context where I’m no longer sure of the basis for that vote is a grave decision. 3) I’m switching my vote to Plzen *for now*, though I will review further debate again before it closes in a little under 9 hours. This has the provisional effect of tying the vote. 4) That means you all have to wrestle with this dilemma, not just me. So there.
This is like Burgers vs Wroclaw in the first round, it's coming down to the wire! I haven't voted yet, so I'm going to read through this thread very carefully because my vote could decide who wins it (scary thought isn't it)!
I just can't understand why Berlin Tierpark is losing because of a few bad enclosures and Plzen wins with several of the worst i have ever seen in a zoo. At least in Beauval some can fly every day.
From what I've seen the fairest description of Beauval's show looks to be that it admirably takes a good idea much further than has been done elsewhere. I haven't seen anything that's struck me as absolutely brand new, but it's clearly something pretty special regardless.
Here is a list of birds used in Beauval's show last year (I took photos of all the signs): Blue-bellied roller Red-legged seriema Bateleur eagle Eurasian buzzard Harris Hawk Augur buzzard Bar-headed goose Greater white-fronted goose Cape Barren goose Eastern imperial eagle Brahminy kite Saker falcon Steppe eagle Brown wood owl Ferruginous eagle Long-legged buzzard Eurasian griffon vulture Grey crowned-crane Palm-nut vulture Andean condor Himalayan vulture Black crowned-crane Marabou stork Turkey vulture Hooded vulture White stork White-backed vulture Pied crow Great white pelican Rock eagle-owl Bald eagle Steller's sea eagle Snowy owl Southern caracara African fish-eagle White-tailed sea eagle Great grey owl Long-crested eagle Black-chested buzzard-eagle Black kite White ground dove Scarlet macaw Sulphur-crested cockatoo Grey parrot Red and green macaw Red-fronted macaw Galah Citron-crested cockatoo Blue and yellow macaw Fulvous whistling duck Jandaya parakeet Green-checked amazon Scarlet ibis White-fronted amazon Arabian trumpeter pigeon Peacock pigeon Yellow-shouldered amazon Hadada ibis African sacred ibis
How were the rollers used in the show @migdog? That's a surprising species and one that I imagine could be particularly impressive.
I think London(?)'s bird show used to use Lilac-breasted Rollers and have them catch food in the air.
That is indeed what they do. The presenter threw some food up and a single roller caught it mid-air. This wasn't in the 2016 show we saw, so may have been a new addition for 2017.
